Plaque with Saint John the Evangelist. Culture: Carolingian. Dimensions: Overall: 7 3/16 x 3 11/16 x 1/4 in. (18.3 x 9.4 x 0.7 cm). Date: early 9th century.The Evangelist, accompanied by his symbol, the eagle, displays the opening text of his gospel. The deep layering of his tunic folds adds life and vigor to the Classical drapery forms. The roughly lettered inscription on the upper border, added at an early date, translates: "The word of John soars to heaven like an eagle." This plaque once was thought to be from a book cover, but it is now argued that this panel and three more, which represent the other authors of the Gospels, formed the wings of a triptych flanking an image of Christ in the central panel. Saint Anthony (AD 251-356) was a Christian monk from Egypt, revered since his death as a saint. Many of his tales are conveyed in the Golden Legend, a classic work of the Middle Ages containing lively tales of saints miracles written in a simple style for a wide audience. This scene illustrates the supernatural temptation faced by Saint Anthony during his retreat to the Egyptian desert. The saint is being tempted by hideous demons, which he resisted.

The Last Supper. Culture: German or South Netherlandish. Dimensions: Overall: 25 x 15 1/2 x 6 1/2 in. (63.5 x 39.4 x 16.5 cm). Date: ca. 1500-1530.This scene of the Last Supper clearly shows each disciple, including Judas, who is seen at the lower right clutching his bag of money, a reference to his future betrayal. The elaborate and detailed carving indicates that the sculpture came from an important ecclesiastical setting, such as a sacrament house that contained the elements for celebrating mass. Cologne Cathedral contained such a structure, made by the sculptor Franz Maidburg (d. 1533), which was dismantled in the nineteenth century. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Icon with the Crucifixion mid-10th century Byzantine A masterpiece in the corpus of Byzantine ivory icons, this small representation of the Crucifixion is the only surviving portion of a triptych whose wings are now missing. It was probably used as a personal devotional object in a private setting. The entire scene is represented taking place beneath a baldachin supported by columns carved á jour. The upper left and right corners contain stylized palmettes, a detail sometimes seen in an analogous position in manuscript illustrations. Christ is represented slumped in death, nude except for a perizoma, or loincloth. Underneath the foot support are three Roman soldiers who are playing dice for Christ's seamless robe (John 19:23-24). At the bottom of the composition, Christ's cross pierces the belly of a reclining, bearded male figure representing Hades, ruler of the Underworld, abode of the dead in classical mythology. . This sculpture group once formed the central section of a small altar for the Carthusian monk who is himself shown kneeling at lower right. The altar would have stood in his cell where he could meditate on Christs Passion in solitude. The relief probably came from the Carthusian monastery in Roermond.

The Adoration of the Magi, 15th century, 17 3/8 x 11 1/4 x 2 in. The other panels would have included The Ascension of Christ, all mounted within a wooden framework attached to the altar. The reliefs, made by Nottingham craftsmen, were popular in both England and continental Europe, yet many of those in English churches were damaged or destroyed during the Protestant Reformation of the early 1500s. Here the Virgin Mary is holding the Christ Child as the three kings, or wise men, present gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Diptych with the Coronation of the Virgin and the Last Judgment ca. 1260-70 French Intended for the private contemplation and devotion of its owner, this palm-size ivory diptych illustrates both the reward of salvation and the consequence of damnation. The left wing represents the Coronation of the Virgin. At the bottom a retinue of the saved souls, including a mendicant friar, a king, a pope, and possibly a deacon, is ushered up a ladder to the celestial paradise by an angel who points the way. In the right wing Christ, accompanied by angels carrying instruments of the Passion, displays the wounds of his Crucifixion. As the dead are called from their graves, the kneeling Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist serve as their intercessors in the Last Judgment. The damned appear in the lower right, pushed headfirst into the mouth of Hell at the order of two grotesque devils. On his left arm he wears the lamb with victory voting on a book, he lifted the right hand to raise. The evangelist, seen from aside, holds his attribute in his left hand, the chalice with snake; He makes the blessing gesture with the judge. On the left a tree trunk with some foliage. Date: 500s.Early images of religious figures are often difficult to identify. The book the man holds may mean that he is an evangelist, one of the authors of the four Gospels. His round face, short, curly beard, and balding head are typical for depictions of Saint Peter, but the lack of keys, which become a standard attribute of the saint, makes that identification uncertain. The nail holes on the edges of the ivory suggest that it may have been one of the many Byzantine ivories used to decorate the covers of religious texts when these were later taken to the West.
