Head of a Bearded Man in a Hat. Artist: Adriaen van Ostade (Dutch, Haarlem 1610-1685 Haarlem). Dimensions: Sheet: 3 3/4 x 3 1/2 in. (9.6 x 8.9 cm). Date: ca. 1650.One of the emblematic painters of seventeenth-century Holland, Adriaen van Ostade was also a prolific draftsman. This sensitive drawing is arguably the best of a small group of head studies by him. Three of those, all in the British Museum, London, also depict an old peasant in a hat, possibly the same model. All four studies may have been done from life. Because this drawing represents its subject not as a type or caricature but as a stern-looking, even melancholy human marked by life, it can be called an exception in the oeuvre of Van Ostade, whose figures are usually seen laughing, drinking, smoking and dancing--or worse. The modest subject of the drawing contrasts with its refined technique. In addition to red and black chalk, Van Ostade used blue pastel to subtly color the hat and the man's jerkin. Museum: Metropolitan

Pie-Us Ecstacy - or Godliness (the Itinerant Preachers) Great Gain. Artist: Thomas Rowlandson (British, London 1757-1827 London). Dimensions: Plate: 11 1/4 x 8 3/4 in. (28.5 x 22.3 cm)Sheet: 11 13/16 x 9 1/4 in. (30 x 23.5 cm). Publisher: Published by Alexander Beugo (British, active 1801-25) , London. Date: November 19, 1825.Rowlandson created this grotesque image of greed to condemn false piety. It portrays William Huntington, a wealthy, eccentric Nonconformist preacher who began life as a coal-heaver. He is shown in a state of ecstasy brought on not by a heavenly vision but by thoughts of venison and mulligatawny soup. Verses below parody an epitaph that Huntington wrote in anticipation of his own demise, in which he declared himself to be an unrecognized prophet. Rowlandson's less complimentary version states: "Here lies W. H. once a heaver of Coals/ but he left his employ, and turned saver of Souls/ And he changed for the better too, fifty times o'er/ For instead of a Coal-cart-he
