Rustic sphinx moth, caterpillar and pupa, Manduca rustica. Illustration drawn and engraved by Richard Polydore Nodder. Handcolored copperplate engraving from George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's "The Naturalist's Miscellany," London, 1797. Most of the 1,064 illustrations of animals, birds, insects, crustaceans, fishes, marine life and microscopic creatures were drawn by George Shaw, Frederick Nodder and Richard Nodder, and engraved and published by the Nodder family. Frederick drew and engraved many of the copperplates until his death around 1800, and son Richard (1774~1823) was responsible for the plates signed RN or RPN. Richard exhibited at the Royal Academy and became botanic painter to King George III.

The Dura-Europos church (also known as the Dura-Europos house church) is the earliest identified Christian house church. It is located in Dura-Europos in Syria and dates from 235 CE. The building consists of a house conjoined to a separate hall-like room, which functioned as the meeting room for the church. The surviving frescoes of the baptistry room are probably the most ancient Christian paintings. Murals include the 'Good Shepherd' the 'Healing of the paralytic' and 'Christ and Peter walking on water'. These are considered the earliest depictions of Jesus Christ. There were also frescoes of Adam and Eve as well as David and Goliath. The frescoes clearly followed the Hellenistic Jewish iconographic tradition, but they are more crudely done than the paintings of the nearby Dura-Europos synagogue.

General Notes: Hutzel guide says we have negatives, but we cannot find them. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.
