The Abandoned. Artist: Auguste Rodin (French, Paris 1840-1917 Meudon). Dimensions: 7 9/16 x 11 7/8 in. (19.4 x 30.4 cm). Date: 1898-1907.Rodin began titling his drawings when he exhibited them at the 1900 Exposition Universelle. As with his sculptures, the titles remained flexible. Sometimes he appended more than one title to the same composition, enjoying the possibility of multiple meanings coexisting within a work. Other iterations of this drawing appear with inscriptions such as Psyché and Chanson de geste (epic poem). Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Head, Shoulder, and Foot, Studies for "Scenes from the Chios Massacres" 1823 Eugène Delacroix French This study of a cadaverous figure relates to Delacroixs ambitious submission to the Salon of 1824, "Scenes from the Massacres at Chios" (1823; Musée du Louvre). The slaughter of tens of thousands of Greeks by Ottoman troops on the island of Chios escalated the Greek War of Independence (1821−30), and these events, which riveted the French public, fueled Delacroixs conception of his canvas.
