Portrait of Berthe Morisot ca. 1876 Marcellin-Gilbert Desboutin French Desboutin is known for his intimate portraits of artists, writers, and cultural figures. This depiction of the painter Berthe Morisot is typical of Desboutins work in drypoint—a technique in which the artist directly scratches the image with a sharp needle, effectively drawing onto the copper plate. Desboutin most likely met Morisot through his friends Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas, and the two participated together in the second Impressionist exhibition in the spring of 1876. In this print, produced probably later that year, Desboutin juxtaposed the highly worked, rich blacks of Morisots dress, hair, eyes with the faint outline of her armchair and the then-fashionable Japanese fan in her hands.. Study of a Womans Head and Hands ca. 1717 Antoine Watteau French Born in the northern French city of Valenciennes, Watteau followed a circuitous route from copyist to member of the Academie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, where his morceau de réception was approved in 1717 in the newly created category of fêtes galantes. The enigmatic scenes to which this term referred centered around themes of love and dalliance set in imaginary park landscapes. Elegant figures in contemporary or theatrical dress were not posed or placed to conform to explicit narratives, but rather were based on the individual studies made from life that filled his sketchbooks.Admired for their mise-en-page, Watteau's drawings often combine separate studies, as seen here, where a study of a womans hands is set below an oblique study of a her head, seen from above.
