The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Date: 17th century.This monumental and spirited composition sketch of stark chiaroscuro contrasts portrays the kneeling, praying figure of William, Duke of Aquitaine, at lower right before a rocky landscape, as the saint is about to be led by one of the angels to the desolate valley of the Gellone, where he would found the Benedictine monastery of Saint Guilhem-du-Desert (some of which stone-remains are today in the Cloisters, The Metropolitan Museum of Art). The drawing shows the elements of the story of Saint William as told in the twelfth-century biography, the Vita Sancti Wilhelmi.The sheet may be dated in the late 1650s, based on comparison to the composition of 'Christ's Charge to Peter' (San Giovanni dei Fiorentini, Rome), dated 1659, and based on the more significant evidence of its distinctive drawing technique.

Kusumi Morikage made this triptychs central figure a Chinese scholar whose servant boy holds a pole to display a hanging scroll painting of bamboo. Though unidentified, the scholar is likely Su Dongpo (1037-1101), a famous Chinese statesman, poet, and painter. Bird-and-flower paintings in an abbreviated, quasi-Chinese style complement this portrait of an ancient Chinese literary hero.

Standing Female Nude. Artist: Unknown (French). Dimensions: 43.4 x 28.3 cm (17 1/16 x 11 1/8 in.). Date: ca. 1856.The original impulse behind these boldly ambitious figure studies may have been to aid a painter or sculptor, but they are nonetheless without parallel in the early history of photography. Enlarged to the size of drawn académies--drawings of the live model that were a standard part of art instruction in France--their scale alone sets them apart from the more modest productions of Vallou de Villeneuve, Durieu, and other artists of the 1850s. More unusually, the images are interrupted by a surface pattern that gives the impression that the photographs are printed on finely pleated silk rather than paper--likely the result of a technical error. Instead of wiping clean his glass-plate negatives and starting over as virtually all other photographers would have done, this artist recognized that the pattern created a veil that, like time or memory, removed the images from their

Study of Drapery. Artist: Pierre Paul Prud'hon (French, Cluny 1758-1823 Paris). Dimensions: 10 1/16 x 10 1/4 in. (25.5 x 26 cm). Date: ca. 1813.This detailed drapery study is one of several drawings Prud'hon made for his painting of Andromache and Astyanax (1813-17, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). The painting, which was not completed in his lifetime, depicts a scene from Racine's play, in which Andromache rejects Pyrrhus, whose father, Achilles, had killed her husband Hector. This sheet was a study for the lower hem of Andromache's gown as it falls over the side of a chair, a detail he made changes to as he worked on the canvas. The delicate stumping of the black and white chalk endows the drawing with a velvety yet radiant quality. Stencil with Pine Boughs and Waterfall 19th century Japan This pictorial stencil includes two waterfalls. One originates at the top of the stencil and falls down, while the other begins at the bottom and rises: the pattern has a dual orientation. This design strategy is very common in stencils, especially those meant to produce cloth for traditional Japanese dress, which has no shoulder seams.
