Fox ca. 1870 Louis Ducos Du Hauron French Ducos du Hauron, an amateur physicist and artist, began experimenting with color photography in the early 1860s. By 1868 he had patented a three-color process that he improved upon and published the following year in the treatise Les Couleurs en photographie: solution du problème. His method involved exposing negatives through green, orange-red, and blue-violet filters and then making positives of them on three sheets of gelatin incorporating carbon pigments of primary colors. When superimposed, the three layers made a single color photograph: a technique that is essentially the basis of modern color processes.. Fox 286318

Study of Drapery ca. 1813 Pierre Paul Prud'hon French This detailed drapery study is one of several drawings Prudhon made for his painting of Andromache and Astyanax (1813-17, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). The painting, which was not completed in his lifetime, depicts a scene from Racines play, in which Andromache rejects Pyrrhus, whose father, Achilles, had killed her husband Hector. This sheet was a study for the lower hem of Andromaches gown as it falls over the side of a chair, a detail he made changes to as he worked on the canvas. The delicate stumping of the black and white chalk endows the drawing with a velvety yet radiant quality. Prudhons delicate draftsmanship captures the weave and the fringes of the drapery—elements that were altered in the final painting.. Study of Drapery 376657

Landscape (from Sketchbook X) 1885 William Trost Richards American This sketchbook contains fifty-one drawings in graphite and ink, primarily of Pacific Northwest landscape and marine subjects. The addition to the Museums collection of this and one other sketchbook (1992.2.1) of New England and Pennsylvania landscape and marine subjects by Richards virtually completes a representation of the range of the artists graphic achievement. The books are remarkable for both highly finished compositions and for pages of rapid notes probably taken during strolls through the countryside. The pages testify to Richards tireless pleasure in observing nature, to the sketchbooks utility as a rehearsal place for his hand, and to the vivid impressions he could produce with the simplest of means. Under the Cliffs, 1871 (from Sketchbook) ca. 1870 Daniel Huntington American The leading portraitist in New York during the post-Civil War period--and president of the National Academy of Design from 1862 to 1870 and from 1877 to 1890--Daniel Huntington was a conservative painter, a man highly respected by his clients and colleagues throughout his long career. Although he traveled widely and frequently during the mid- and late nineteenth century, he shunned new artistic concepts and styles. As a staunch academician in technique and manner, Huntington understood that proper draftsmanship was at the core of accomplished painting. He sketched throughout the course of his life and his extant drawings number over a thousand.
