Over Robe (Uchikake) with Design of Bamboo Blinds, Curtain Screens, Decorative Fans, and Auspicous Motifs. Culture: Japan. Dimensions: Overall: 76 x 51 in. (193 x 129.5 cm). Date: ca. 1920s-30s.The stylized clouds, bamboo blinds (misu), minutely decorated curtain screens (kicho), and elaborate fans adorned with colorful strings (hiogi) evoke the golden age of the Heian period (794-1185) court. This type of decorative pattern became fashionable during the second half of the Edo period (1615-1868) among wealthy chonin ladies. It continued to be popular in an altered form into the early twentieth century, with vivid green becoming a favored ground color from the 1910s to 1930s, although there are examples in red and black. The over robe is covered in auspicious motifs. Among the skillfully rendered details are the translucency of the bamboo blinds, the ornamental patterns of the curtain screen, and the individual designs of the fans at the bottom of the robe, which emulate in silk, dyes,

This extraordinarily complex mantle, or cloak, is one of the most renowned Andean textiles in the world. It was most likely used as a ceremonial object. The ninety figures decorating the border, created by needle knitting, have been interpreted as a microcosm of life on Perus South Coast two thousand years ago, with a particular focus on agriculture. Many of the images illustrate native flora and fauna as well as cultivated plants. Costumed figures may represent humans impersonating gods and acting as intermediaries between the real and supernatural worlds. Severed human trophy heads are shown as germinating seeds, suggesting the practice of ritual sacrifice and the interconnected cycles of birth and death. Hang Trong painting (Vietnamese: Tranh Hàng Trống) is a genre of Vietnamese woodcut painting that originated from the area of Hàng Trống and Hàng Nón streets in Old Hanoi's 36 Streets District. In the past, Hang Trong painting was an essential element of the Tết holiday in Hanoi, but today this tradition has almost disappeared and authentic Hang Trong paintings are found only in museums or fine art galleries.

Date: ca. 15th century.This remarkably fine Nepalese figurative embroidery is a rare survivor of an important genre of textile art. The fragment may have formed part of a religious hanging associated with a Hindu temple. The scenes, while incomplete, likely represent episodes of the goddess Durga battling demons from the Devi Mahatmya, the principal liturgical text devoted to the goddess in this emanation. Siyah Kalem or 'Black Pen' is the name given to the 15th century school of painting attributed to Mehmed Siyah Kalem. Nothing is known of his life, but his work indicates that he was of Central Asian Turkic origin, and thoroughly familiar with camp and military life. The paintings appear in the 'Conqueror's Albums', so named because two portraits of Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror are present in one of them. The albums are made up of miniatures taken from manuscripts of the 14th, 15th, and early 16th centuries, and one series of paintings is inscribed 'work of Master Muhammad Siyah Kalem'. Something of the style and techniques of Chinese paintings is apparent in these, and an acquaintance with Buddhist art, particularly in the depictions of grotesque demonic figures.

Anti-fascist poster, by the artist, Antonio CaÒavate Gomez, depicting General Francisco Franco, leader of Nationalist Spain. the central figure of the rider on the horse is reminiscent of the caballo de bastos (knight of clubs) that appears on Spanish playing cards. Consequently, the club that Franco clasps in his right hand is symbolic of both the caricature of him and of the violent and repressive nature of Francoís leadership.

Kalighat paintings reflect the time and context in which they were created. Kalighat painters used their medium to offer penetrating and insightful critiques of British-influenced Indians as well as the British themselves through satires and caricatures. Newly rich Bengali native Indian clerks (babus) aspired to dress and behave like their British masters, and Kalighat painters taunted them for this. A chinless barber with cleaning pins tucked in his turban is cleaning the ears of a lady customer. A fashionable woman, she smokes a hookah and exposes one breast to her flirtatious barber. As the Bengali babus spent time with their mistresses and courtesans, neglected wives and concubines were portrayed as relying on the company of their servants.
