A photograph taken of Philae, an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam, Egypt. Philae was initially located near the expansive First Cataract of the Nile in Upper Egypt and was the site of an Egyptian temple complex. The temple complex was dismantled and moved to nearby Agilkia Island as part of the UNESCO Nubia Campaign project, protecting this and other compounds before the 1970 completion of the Aswan High Dam. The most ancient was a temple for Isis, built in the reign of Nectanebo I during 380-362 BC, the other ruins date from the Ptolemaic Kingdom (282-145 BC), with many traces of Roman work in Philae dedicated to Ammon-Osiris.

Tomb Stela of Hetepsi ca. 2323-2100 B.C. Old Kingdom Hetepsi's stela was found in a pit for a burial in the general vicinity of the mastaba of Neferseshempepy, good name Senni, at Dendera, and her stela appears to be by the same hand as the decorations of that mastaba. Wall frieze from the tomb of Ramesses VI. Tomb KV9 in Egypt's Valley of the Kings was originally constructed by Pharaoh Ramesses V. He was interred here, but his uncle, Ramesses VI, later reused the tomb as his own. The layout is typical of the 20th dynasty - the Ramesside period. A photograph taken of the Abu Simbel Temple, in Nubia, Southern Egypt, near the border with Sudan. The complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temple dates to the 13th century BC, during the 19th dynasty reign of the Pharaoh Ramesses II. It is a monument to the king and commemorates his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. The complex was relocated in its entirety in 1968 under the supervision of a Polish archaeologist, Kazimierz Michalowski, on an artificial hill made from a domed structure, high above the Aswan High Dam reservoir.

At the end of the fourth millennium B.C., written language developed in the region, first as pictographs and then evolving into abstract forms called cuneiform. The pictographs, like the ones on this tablet, are called proto-cuneiform and were drawn in the clay with a pointed implement. Circular impressions alongside the pictographs represented numerical symbols. Cuneiform (meaning wedge-shaped) script was written by pressing a reed pen or stylus with a wedge-shaped tip into a clay tablet. Clay, when dried to a somewhat hardened state, made a fine surface for writing, and when fired the records written on it became permanent.Early writi

A photograph taken of the Red Chapel of Hatshepsut (the Chapelle Rouge) constructed initially as a barque shrine during the reign of Hatshepsut, the fifth pharaoh of the eighteenth dynasty of Ancient Egypt and ruled from approximately 1479 to 1458 BC. Although it had been demolished and parts were reused in antiquity, following rediscovery, the chapel has been reconstructed using its original materials. Its original location is thought to have been in the central court of the temple of Amun at Karnak, near Thebes.

Relief of Queen Nefertiti ca. 1353-1336 BC New Kingdom, Amarna Period Nefertiti, whose name means "the Beautiful One Is Here," was principal queen of Akhenaton. Like her mother-in-law Queen Tiye, Nefertiti was a powerful figure in the court. She is frequently shown participating in religious rituals on an equal footing with her husband, and she already played an unprecedented role in the decoration of the Aten structures that Amenhotep IV built at Karnak, from which this block almost certainly came, before his move to Tell el-Amarna.This relief block shows the queen wearing an elaborate wig surmounted by what was originally a towering crown of uraei, sun disk, two cow horns, and two feathers. Her arm is raised in offering to the Aten. False door of Tjetji and his wife Debet. Limestone, 4th & 5th dynasty, about 2500-2400 BC. From the tomb of Tjetji at Giza. This door and one nearby come from the same tomb. False doors were the main places for making offerings in the Old Kingdom. One of the dead person's spirits would pass through the door between the worlds of the dead and the living.

Jubilee Relief of Ramesses II ca. 1279-1213 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside This deeply carved relief of Ramesses II shows the king wearing the red crown of Lower Egypt and seated within a shrine, the roof of which is decorated with uraei. It was part of a scene showing the king celebrating one of the sed festivals, or jubilees, of his long reign. Ramesses II, known as Ramesses the Great, ruled for sixty-six years and had an enormous impact both in Egypt and abroad. In his military campaigns, he confronted the expanding empire of the Hittites and eventually secured a treaty with them and married two Hittite princesses. He extended his rule far into Nubia, as the building of his huge rock-cut temple at Abu Simbel testifies. He built monuments as far north as Byblos in modern-day Lebanon and as far south as Jebel Barkal in the Sudan. Tomb chapel of Raemkai: South wall of the entrance corridor ca. 2446-2389 B.C. Old Kingdom THE ENTRANCE CORRIDORScenes decorating the entrance thicknesses of Old Kingdom tombs often included a movement of people and objects into the interior. The entrance corridor here is decorated on both sides with scenes in several registers. At the very top, parts of two ships can be seen. Only the hulls of ships are preserved, but the absence of rowing oars and the position of the steering oars show that both boats are sailing westward into the tomb, and thus into the realm of the dead. In the registers below, an enshrined statue of the deceased is dragged on a sled over ground moistened by a man pouring water from a jar. The inscription reads: "accompanying the statue to its chamber." In the third register offering bearers march into the tomb. Even the slaughter of oxen in the bottom register is a fitting theme for an entrance corridor, as butchering usually took place outside the tomb. Note that

A servant of the royal Achaemenid court at Persepolis is shown carrying a covered vessel to the New Year's festival banquet. His clothing distinguishes him as a Mede. The Medes had dominated the Persian region until overthrown by the Achaemenids in 550 BC. The Achaemenids became the ruling dynasty of Persia until 330 BC, when they were defeated by Alexander the Great. This bas relief was probably part of a sculptural procession decorating the inner wall of the western staircase of the palace of King Darius I (r. 521-486 BCE).

Stela of the Overseer of the Fortress Intef ca. 2000-1988 B.C. Middle Kingdom On its top ledge, this stela proclaims the name of King Nebhepetre Mentuhotep II (ca. 2051-2000 B.C.), the founder of the Middle Kingdom. In the same line, the stela's owner, Intef, refers to himself as "his (the king's) servant." Intef also recounts that he was overseer of a fortress and served in the region of Herakleopolis, the capital city of the minor kings who ruled northern Egypt before the country's reunification under Mentuhotep II.
