S84-37514 (18 July 1984) --- Marc Garneau, representing Canada's National Research Council as one of two 41-G payload specialists, gets the feel of zero gravity aboard a special NASA aircraft designed to create brief periods of weightlessness. Five astronauts and an oceanographer from the U.S. Dept. of the Navy will join Canada's first representative in space for the trip aboard Challenger later this year. This KC-135 aircraft is used extensively for evaluation of equipment and experiments scheduled for future missions.

STS090-377-011 (17 APRIL-3 MAY 1998) --- Astronaut Dafydd R. (Dave) Williams, mission specialist representing the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), accomplishes more than one purpose when he sleeps in this bunk aboard the Earth-orbiting Space Shuttle Columbia. Conducting a Neurolab sleep experiment, Williams wears equipment which includes a sleep net (mesh cap that monitors and records brain waves); a Respiratory Inductance Plethysmograph (RIP) suit for monitoring respiration; and an activity monitor -- a device (out of view) worn on the wrist to detect and record body movement. Data on brain waves, eye movements, respiration, heart rate, and oxygen concentration are routed to a portable data recorder. The entire system has capabilities similar to a fully equipped sleep laboratory on Earth. The sleeping bag is conventional Shuttle ware and not part of the experiment.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- In the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, technicians are documenting the installation of radius blocks to space shuttle Discovery's external fuel tank's support beams known as "stringers" near the intertanks thrust panel area.The thrust panel is where the tank meets the two solid rocket boosters and sees the most stress during the flight into orbit. After the modifications and additional scans of the stringers are complete, foam insulation will be re-applied. Discovery's next launch opportunity to the International Space Station on the STS-133 mission is targeted for liftoff Feb. 24.

Peter Siebold is an aeronautical engineer, experimental test pilot, and flight test engineer at Scaled Composites. He sits in the simulator for White Knight II and SpaceShipTwo, the next stage in the company's spaceplane development.

Reilly, STS-104 mission specialist, prepares to don his Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) space suit for a fit check in one of the chambers in the Crew Systems Laboratory at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). Reilly is wearing a thermal undergarment over which he will wear the EMU. The STS-104 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) represents the Space Shuttle Atlantis' first flight using a new engine and is targeted for a liftoff no earlier than June 14, 2001.

STS064-05-028 (9-20 Sept. 1994) --- On the space shuttle Discovery's aft flight deck, astronaut Susan J. Helms handles controls for the Remote Manipulator System (RMS). The robot arm operated by Helms, who remained inside the cabin, was used to support several tasks performed by the crew during the almost 11-day mission. Those tasks included the release and retrieval of the free-flying Shuttle Pointed Autonomous Research Tool For Astronomy 201 (SPARTAN 201), a six-hour spacewalk and the Shuttle Plume Impingement Flight Experiment (SPIFEX).

S90-45238 (25 June 1990) ---- Astronaut Linda M. Godwin, STS 37 mission specialist, simulates emergency egress from a Space Shuttle. The training session was held in the Johnson Space Center's (JSC) weightless environment training facility (WET-F). The 25-ft. pool in the facility served as a simulated ocean into which a parachute landing might be made. Early next year, Godwin, along with four other astronauts, will fly onboard Atlantis for a five-day mission.

Harbaugh and some of his fellow STS 39 astronauts were in JSC's weightless environment training facility (WET-F). Harbaugh is actually suspended over water. This type training uses the WET-F's 25 ft. deep pool to simulate an ocean parachute landing.

Kavandi will join four other astronauts for a June mission with the International Space Station (ISS).

STS064-04-009 (9-20 Sept. 1994) --- Astronaut L. Blaine Hammond, STS-64 pilot, talks to students on Earth via the Shuttle Amateur Radio Experiment (SAREX) on the space shuttle Discovery's flight deck. The recently licensed Ham operator and several other crew members throughout the mission were connected with schools around the world with the aid of a number of amateur radio operators. Hammond joined five other NASA astronauts for almost 11 days in Earth orbit aboard Discovery.

Perseverance entry, descent, and landing phase lead Allen Chen and Members of NASAs Perseverance rover team react in mission control after receiving confirmation the spacecraft successfully touched down on Mars, Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021, at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. A key objective for Perseverances mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planets geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - These newly designed gloves are entries in the 2009 Astronaut Glove Challenge, part of NASAs Centennial Challenges Program, at the Astronaut Hall of Fame near NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida.The nationwide competition focused on developing improved pressure suit gloves for astronauts to use while working in space. During the challenge, inventors tested the gloves to measure dexterity and strength during operation in a glove box which simulates the vacuum of space. Centennial Challenges is NASAs program of technology prizes for the citizen-inventor. The winning prize for the Glove Challenge is $250,000 provided by the Centennial Challenges Program.

JSC2000-05366 (7 June 2000) --- Cosmonaut Yuri Gidzenko, Soyuz commander for the Expedition One crew, wearing thermal undergarment, is about to don an Orlan space suit. Gidzenko was preparing to participate in an underwater simulation in the Hydrolab facility at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia.Gidzenko was joined by astronaut William Shepherd, mission commander, in the underwater session.

ISS024-E-007261 (2 July 2010) --- Russian cosmonauts Alexander Skvortsov (foreground) and Mikhail Kornienko, Expedition 24 commander and flight engineer, respectively, monitor data at the manual TORU docking system controls in the Zvezda Service Module of the International Space Station during the approach of the ISS Progress 38 supply vehicle. The attempted docking on July 2, 2010, was aborted when telemetry between the Progress and the space station was lost about 25 minutes before its planned docking. As a result, the Progress vehicle continued on its trajectory and glided past the space station. Later, the Progress successfully docked to Zvezdas aft end at 12:17 p.m. (EDT) on July 4, 2010. The docking was executed flawlessly by Progress Kurs automated rendezvous system.
