Astronomical Phenomena and Discoveries

Images revealing celestial bodies and events, including comet outbursts and moons, captured through advanced astronomical instruments.

An image series over a five-hour period shows a 'full-halo' coronal mass ejection (CME) exploding out from the Sun at over 1000 km/s. The images taken by the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) C3 instrument of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) show the expanding cloud of particles in visible light. The CME struck the Earth's magnetosphere two and a half days after the eruption with little effect.
