Joseph Pennell was an active and internationally celebrated figure in the etching revival: he helped to establish the Philadelphia Society of Etchers in 1880, produced more than nine hundred etchings during his career, and authored numerous publications about printmaking. He is also known as one of James McNeill Whistlers most ardent followers; Pennell befriended the elder artist after moving to London in 1884. His debt to Whistler is evident in the Japanese characteristics of his work, such as the high vantage point of this downtown London street scene. American Art 1903

Etching on laid paper, 21 13/16 x 16 1/8 in. (55.4 x 40.9 cm). Around 1749-50 Giovanni Battista Piranesi published an ambitious series of fourteen large etchings known as The Imaginary Prisons. These plates depict vast, labyrinthine spaces spanned by vaults and arches, crossed by seemingly endless staircases, and filled with hooks, chains, and ropes that suggest machines of torture. The enormous chambers dwarf the mysterious figures that populate them, evoking an oppressive and unrelenting atmosphere of privation and despair. Piranesi was trained as an architect, and the design of his fantastical dungeons was informed by his knowledge of ancient Roman ruins. Classical architecture was a symbol of Western civilization and its achievements, but here, it represents something dark and irrational. The hum

(40.64 × 31.75 cm) (sheet), Etching, Germany, 19th century, Munich artist Franz Stuck was one of Germanys leading artists of the Symbolist and Art Nouveau movements. He rose to such prominence that he was ennobled in 1905 as Franz Ritter von Stuck. Though best known as a painter and sculptor of images based on mythological heroes, he occasionally explored other avenues. In this early work, one of just a handful of etchings that he produced, a calm pool of water reflects nearby trees on its surface. Though completely different from the work that would make him famous, it does reveal the young artists sensitivity to nature.
