CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - At the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft is in position under space shuttle Discovery in the mate-demate device for mating operations to begin. The device, known as the MDD, is a large gantry-like steel structure used to hoist a shuttle off the ground and position it onto the back of the aircraft, or SCA. The SCA is a Boeing 747 jet, originally manufactured for commercial use, which was modified by NASA to transport the shuttles between destinations on Earth. The SCA designated NASA 905 is assigned to the remaining ferry missions, delivering the shuttles to their permanent public display sites. NASA 905 is scheduled to ferry Discovery to the Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia on April 17, after which the shuttle will be placed on display in the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - The driver of the external tank transporter maneuvers external tank #120 toward the nearby Turn Basin on NASAs Kennedy Space Center where the barge Pegasus is waiting (right). The barge will be towed to NASAs Michoud Assembly Facility in Louisiana for additional modifications. This tank is the first of the newly designed tanks that were delivered to Kennedy. Previously, the tank was stacked with Discovery and, more recently, Atlantis. The tank has already gone through two tanking cycles during tanking tests but was replaced with tank #121 for Discoverys return to flight mission STS-114.

Viewed from the rear, the orbiter Atlantis heads toward the open doors of the Orbiter Processing Facility bay 3 after being towed from the Shuttle Landing Facility. The blue lines represent the orbiters turning lines into and away from bay 3. The unusual silhouette of the aft section on the orbiter is due to the tail cone covering the aft engines. Atlantis landed Feb. 19 at Edwards Air Force Base concluding mission STS-98. The orbiter returned to Florida on the back of a Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, known as a ferry flight, that began March 1. Unfavorable weather conditions kept it on the ground at Altus AFB, Okla., for several days until it could return to Florida. Atlantis will be prepared in the OPF for mission STS-104, the 10th construction flight to the International Space Station, scheduled to launch June 8

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- The Space Shuttle's second lightweight external tank arrives at Kennedy Space Center and is moved to the Vehicle Assembly Building after removal from the barge by which it was delivered to the Launch Complex 39 Turn Basin. This external tank is slated for use on the STS-88 launch, the first International Space Station assembly flight. The improved tank is about 7,000 pounds lighter than its predecessors and was developed to increase the Shuttle payload capacity on International Space Station assembly flights. The tank was sent from the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- After dark, under the mate/demate device at the Shuttle Landing Facility, or SLF, at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, workers prepare space shuttle Endeavour for attachment of the sling that will lift the shuttle away from the shuttle carrier aircraft, or SCA, underneath. The SCA carried the shuttle piggyback from California, where Endeavour landed Nov. 30 to end the STS-126 mission. When Endeavour is on the ground, it will be towed via the two-mile tow-way from the SLF by a diesel-powered tractor to the Orbiter Processing Facility where it will begin preparations for its next mission, STS-127, targeted for May 2009.
