Wounded Coast Guardsman Wins Purple Heart, Promotion. Coast Guardsman Thomas Sortino of Forest Park, Illinois, wounded in the North African invasion, receives the Purple Heart from Vice Admiral Russell R. Waesche, U.S. Coast Guard commandant. Simultaneously, Sortino was promoted from boatswain's mate first class to chief. After his invasion boat had been sunk by enemy action, the Coast Guardsman was rescued from the water by fishermen who brought him to a French surgeon. The surgeon, without anesthetics, amputated his arm.

Adam T. Raczkowski, an 89-year-old veteran of World War I, is congratulated by Secretary of the Army John O. Marsh Jr. after receiving his Purple Heart Medal nearly 66 years after it was earned. Raczkowski was a private serving in France with 2nd Battalion, 308th Infantry, 77th Division, when he was hospitalized after a German gas attack. Not realizing that injuries sustained in a gas attack qualified him for a Purple Heart, Raczkowski never put in for the medal. The next day, Franco went to say goodbye to him at the Torrejón de Ardoz joint air base. At the foot of the plane stairs they said goodbye with a hug that Jaime Pato immortalized.

Ward, Coxswain of 432 Park Street, Bridgeport, Conn., is presented with the Silver Star Medal by Captain Frank A. Leamy of 62 Woodmont Road, Belle Haven, Alexandria, VA. While acting as Coxswain of a landing barge off the Coast Guard-manned invasion transport on which he served in the initial invasion of France, Coast Guardsman Ward rescued the crews of two other landing craft which had been destroyed by enemy fire.

The new air division will be based at Andersen air force base on Guam. In his last official act as commander of bomber command. Evans of Bryn Mawr, Wash., receives the Navy Cross for "extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations" from Rear Admiral Edward D. Jones, U.S. Coast Guard, at ceremonies held at the Coast Guard's Alameda, Calif., training station. Evans, a chief signalman, is 22 years old. He displayed his heroism in the evacuation by Coast Guardsmen of a Marine battalion trapped by the Japanese at Guadalcanal.
