(207.01 x 149.86 cm) (outer frame), Oil on canvas, France, 17th century, Saint Ambrose, who lived in the 4th fourth century, was an important Christian scholar and bishop. Here he is depicted among his books in a forceful pose emphasized by his massive hands. On the tables edge, a scourge, or whip—the knotted rope attached to a wooden rod—symbolizes Ambroses fight against heresy. The three knots refer to the doctrine of the Trinity, the concept of one god in three persons: Father, Son (Jesus), and Holy Spirit. Claude Vignon made this painting upon returning to Paris after spending over a decade in Italy. The saints sumptuous clothing and luminous gold miter (headdress) display a delight in color typical of Vignons work from this period.

Date: 1547.Fra Gregorio was a member of the order of the Hieronymites, or Poor Hermits of Saint Jerome. The artist was friendly with members of this community in Venice and nearby Treviso, and was probably in harmony with their evangelical fervor and ideals. The friar expresses these ideals through his gestures, as he beats his chest (Saint Jerome was often depicted in this way), and by reading the Homilies of Saint Gregory the Great. This reading would have led him to meditate on the Crucifixion, shown in the background in a vignette of deeply felt emotion. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

In this version, from the last years of the painter's life, the saint is shown in the red vestments of a cardinal, seated before an open book, an attribute indicating his role as translator of the Bible from Greek into Latin in the fifth century.
