Pieter Cnoll was the wealthy senior merchant representing the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Batavia (now Jakarta), a major port and Dutch trade center in the 17th century. Cnoll was married to a Eurasian woman, Cornelia van Nijenroode, who was the daughter of a Japanese woman and Cornelis van Nieuwroode, a VOC merchant in Japan. The Dutch East India Company, or VOC, was a chartered company granted a monopoly by the Dutch government to carry out colonial activities in Asia. It was the first multinational corporation in the world and the first company to issue stock. It was also arguably the world's first megacorporation, possessing quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, imprison and execute convicts, negotiate treaties, coin money and establish colonies. The VOC was set up in 1602 to gain a foothold in the East Indies (Indonesia) for the Dutch in the lucrative spice trade, which until that point was dominated by the Portuguese. Portrait of David van Mollem with his Family. The wealthy Amsterdam silk merchant David van Mollem sits with his descendants in the garden of his country house, Zijdebalen (Silk Reams’), along the River Vecht near Utrecht. The portraitist, Verkolje, also designed the garden, which featured two large marble vases by the sculptor Jacob Cressant. Van Mollem was an authority on nature and is portrayed passing on his love of plants and science to his grandchildren.

He was admired and patronized by the Capel family and some of his best work, including this double portrait, was installed at their country house, Cassiobury Park. The American School Matthew Pratt American 1765 The picture depicts a scene in the London studio of Benjamin West, who is generally agreed to be the figure standing at the left. Based on comparisons to self-portraits, Pratt is the man at the easel, an accomplished portrait painter. The identities of the other artists represented in the picture remain uncertain, but they are younger and they draw rather than paint. The composition explores the academic tradition as carried out among Americans in late-eighteenth century London.

Auction Sale in Clinton Hall, New York, 1876 1876 Ignacio de León y Escosura Spanish Escosura, a Spanish-born, Paris-based genre painter, arrived in the United States in autumn 1876 to see the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition and to work in New York for a few months. His ambitious canvas represents a sale of objets dart at Clinton Hall, once located at 13 Astor Place, though it is not possible to identify the specific auction. Escosura, himself a voracious collector, introduced multiple narrative threads—from the bewhiskered auctioneers in the rostrum to a fashionably-dressed clientele clutching printed catalogues to the sleeping man in the lower right corner. The artist exhibited the painting in the prestigious Paris Salon of 1877, and later presented it to The Met, a gift brokered by art dealer and long-time trustee Samuel P. Avery.. Aretino in the Studio of Tintoretto 1848 Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres French This small oil painting depicts an interaction between the artist Tintoretto and the literary critic and satirist Pietro Aretino, two cultural figures of sixteenth century Venice. The episode, real or apocryphal, was originally documented by Carlo Ridolfi in his Life of Tintoretto (1642). Ingres portrays the moment when Tintoretto feigns violence towards Aretino, whom he had invited to his studio to sit for a portrait. Aretino, shown in the pose of the martyr St. Francis receiving the stigmata, momentarily fears danger before recognizing the gesture as Tintorettos playful revenge for Aretinos criticism of his work.Painted in 1848 for Marcotte Genlis, this picture is Ingress second version of the subject, the original dating to 1815.
