Two elegantly dressed men enter the room, holding a partridge and a hare, alluding to Dutch expressions for ëhunting hareí and ëbirdingí, used vulgarly to mean ëmaking loveí. One woman accepts the hare, and there is a bed in the right background (BSLOC_2016_3_59)

Isaac Blessing Jacob 1642 Gerbrand van den Eeckhout Dutch Jacob impersonates his elder brother Esau in order to receive the blessing of their father Isaac, a scheme conceived by Rebecca, the blind mans wife. Rembrandt made several drawings of the Old Testament subject in the 1640s, and a few of his pupils followed suit. Marianne Dorothy Harland (1759-1785), Later Mrs. William Dalrymple Richard Cosway British When this portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1779, an art critic decried Cosways “painful and minute attention to little Circumstances,” which gave his work “a coxcomical and ridiculous air.” Indeed, the painting does reveal Cosways minute attention to the furnishing of a fashionable, feminine interior, emphasizing such features as the dressing table bearing a pincushion, scent bottles, and powder puff. Cosway shows his sitter, the daughter of a British vice admiral, in informal morning dress, as though receiving an intimate visitor. The harp Miss Harland plays was closely associated with accomplished female amateurs, appearing, for example, in the work of Jane Austen.. A Scene from the Comedy Hopman Ulrich of de bedrogen Gierigheid (Captain Ulrich or Greed Deceived) Cornelius Troost (1696-1750) pastel and gouache, 1745. Many comedies and farces that Troost depicted revolve around love and adultery. Here, Joris, the servant of Captain Ulrich, accepts a bribe from Godefroy, the lover of Ulrichs wife Sybille. The captain suspects his wife of cheating, which explains why the door is being guarded. Ulrich himself was no better. He married Sybille for her money while she was carrying the child of a nobleman. So the cheater was himself cheated.

One of his first important patrons was Robert Hay Drummond, the Archbishop of York. Drummond attempted to raise an annual salary for West so that the artist could devote his time to producing grand historical paintings, rather than be confined to the lucrative work of portraiture. When this effort failed, Drummond introduced West to King George III, who recognized the artist's abilities and eventually appointed him Historical Painter to the King. West achieved tremendous fame and financial success in London and helped establish the prestigious Royal Academy in 1768.

Halt of the Hunt ca. 1737 Carle (Charles André) Vanloo French Vanloos subject, a supremely elegant hunting party of the kind enjoyed by Louis XV and his court, derives from Watteaus fêtes galantes, but teems with contemporary detail, including a Black, possibly enslaved, servant dressed in exoticized Turkish costume including a turban, feathers, and loose pants. This oil sketch is a study for a picture painted in 1737 for Louis XV's dining room at the Chteau de Fontainebleau. The finished canvas (Musée du Louvre, Paris) no longer retains the shaped top and bottom that would have originally fit into the dining rooms wood paneling. Franz Hals (c. 15821666) was born in southern Netherlandswhat is today Belgium. A Dutch Golden Age painter, Hals is credited as a revolutionary in the field of portraiture. He was particularly know for the way he captured light and atmosphere. Shown here is Franz Hals and His Wife in the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam.. It was painted in 1624. The idea for the painting was Lysbeth's and she put on her best gown and new cap and made him don his Town Hall suit. She gauffered his cuffs carefully, and tied round his neck his finest Van Dyck collar. The pose is realistic. They were married for 50 years. Among his works are Banquet of the Officers of the Calivermen Civic Guard, Catharina Hooft and her Nurse, Gipsy Girl, and Malle Babbe.
