This example may have been painted on his first trip to southern Italy, in 1821. He was well along in his study of landscape painting when, in 1823, he began to frequent the atelier of Jean Victor Bertin (no relation). Elaine 1874 United States. Toby Edward Rosenthal found inspiration for this composition in Idylls of the King, a 19th-century version of the Arthurian legends written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. In the poem, Elaine dies of a broken heart after being spurned by Sir Lancelot; Rosenthalís painting depicts Elaineís postmortem voyage from Astolat to Camelot ìIn her right hand the lily, in her left / The letteróall her bright hair streaming down.î Rosenthalís artistic choices reflect the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites, a group of English artists who favored highly naturalistic details, richly colored surfaces, and subjects drawn from medieval literary sources. After it was purchased by an American patron, Rosenthalís work sparked Elaine hysteria clubs were formed in her honor, dirges and waltzes were composed, and copies of Idylls of the King sold out in bookstores.. Vasily Vereshchagins two monumental paintings depicting wartime violence stem from the artists own experience as a volunteer correspondent and combatant during the Russo-Turkish War in 1877-78. In A Resting Place for Prisoners, a snowstorm beats down on Turkish prisoners who are monitored by Russian soldiers wielding lances while a horse and carriage are buried under the snow in the foreground. The Road of the War Prisoners depicts bloodied, frozen prisoners in the storms aftermath. Crows perch atop the telegraph wires and pick at the lifeless prisoners strewn across the road. Openly antiwar in its biting realism and unflinching portrayal of death, The Road of the War Prisoners was rejected for the czars collection. In 1891, Vereshchagin sold both canvases to New York collectors still haunted by the
