Group of Draped Figures early 1460s Attributed to Antonello da Messina (Antonello di Giovanni d'Antonio) Antonello da Messina's contact with Northern European art had a profound influence on his style. Several features of this drawingin particular, the elongated proportions of the figures and the heavy drapery arranged in sharp, angular foldsdemonstrate Antonello's absorption of Netherlandish and Burgundian styles. A more elaborate drawing of this composition, with the group of figures set against a cityscape, is preserved in the Musée du Louvre. The relationship between the two sheets remains uncertain; the Lehman sheet may be a partial copy of the Louvre version produced by Antonello or a member of his workshop according to his design.. Triumph of the Moon 1500-1510 Italy. Little is known about the Monogrammist P. P., who was active at the turn of the 16th century in Northern Italy, possibly in Ferrara. His prints are often idiosyncratic in style as well as subject matter. In this work, sleepy gatherers display the astrological influence of the moon on human destinies in their erratic, even lunatic behavior. The Christlike figure on a pedestal in the center holds aloft a torch and crescent moon as his companions kneel, either to him or to the heavenly light he presents.. Engraving on cream laid paper . The Raising of Lazarus Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri) Italian ca. 1619 This drawing was identified by Sir Denis Mahon as one of Guercino's preparatory studies for The Raising of Lazarus (Paris, Louvre inv. 1139), a painting dated ca. 1619. Another composition study connected with a painting of this subject, with numerous differences in design with respect to the Museum's drawing and the finished painting, is in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (inv. H 45: see Tuyll Van Serooskerken 1991, cat. no. 5). The outline of forms and the use of wash are extremely descriptive, as is typical of composition studies of this period.
