The Last Supper: Judas Dipping his Hand in the Dish (La Céne. Judas met la main dans le plat) James Tissot (French, 1836-1902). The Last Supper: Judas Dipping his Hand in the Dish (La Céne. Judas met la main dans le plat), 1886-1894. Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper, Image: 9 3/4 x 19 3/8 in. (24.8 x 49.2 cm). For the Passover feast, the apostles (dressed in traveling clothes, like the Jews of the Old Testament book of Exodus, Tissot explains) meet in a room decorated with garlands. During the meal, Jesus reveals that he will be betrayed by one of his disciples; many of them worriedly ask, Is it I?” In this image, Jesus hands the sop, or dipped bread, to Judas Iscariot, identifying him as the traitor. Jesus later dismisses him from the company, urging him to be quick about his business. Here, John the Evangelist, described as the beloved disciple,” lays his head on Jesus’ shoulder, as is traditional in scenes of the Last Supper. By contrast, Judas, across the table

This painting, titled "The Angelus," was done by the French artist Jean Francois Millet (1814-1875). Millet was one of the famous group of French painters who founded what is now known as the Barbizon School. Millet's work is distinguished by an absolute truthfulness to Nature that was the guiding principle of his life. He saw the peasant bent at his work in his fields, and he pictured him in all his gaunt poverty and weariness, while he invested him, by his inspired vision, with the symbolical dignity of labor. The Angelus depicts the laborers' thanks for the gift of plenty, and it expresses

Christ and the Virgin in the House at Nazareth, c. 1640. Francisco de Zurbarán (Spanish, 1598-1664). Oil on canvas; framed: 201 x 256 x 10 cm (79 1/8 x 100 13/16 x 3 15/16 in.); unframed: 165 x 218.2 cm (64 15/16 x 85 7/8 in.). Stories of Christs childhood and adolescence became increasingly popular during the Counter-Reformation because they were easily understood by a broad public. Rather than taking a story from the Bible, Zurbarán appears to have invented this subject, in which Jesus pricks himself on a crown of thorns he is weaving, foretelling his later torment at the Crucifixion. Despite the grand scale and monumental figures, the work has remarkable intimacy and quietness, emphasizing such details as the Virgins tears.
