Our Lady of Mercy, called The Pilgrim of Quito” ca. 1730-40 Unknown This work belongs to the genre of "pilgrim images," cult images or likenesses of them that were taken on alms-gathering missions. In a scene reminiscent of the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt, a miracle-working image of the Virgin and Child venerated by the Mercedarians of Quito is transported on a mule led by a white-robed friar. A vignette in the background narrates a miracle that occurred at sea, between Portobello and Cartagena, when Dutch pirates seized and profaned the image of the Virgin whereupon the aggrieved image of the Christ Child threw itself into the sea. Both Virgin and Child were miraculously saved and restored to the care of the Mercedarians in Quito. Such stories emerged, or were invented, in connection with the actual practice of taking the image on missions to gather alms for the construction of a new church. During a period of nearly thirty years, from 1706 until 1735, the Quito Virgin was taken

Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints Zenobius, John the Baptist, Reparata and John the Evangelist Nardo di Cione (Italian, Florentine, active 1343-1356/1366). Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints Zenobius, John the Baptist, Reparata and John the Evangelist, mid 14th century. Tempera and tooled gold on panel, 77 1/2 x 39 1/2 in. (196.9 x 100.3 cm). In 1348, the bubonic plague killed more than half the population of Florence, causing profound social, economic, and psychic devastation. In the plagues aftermath Nardo di Cione painted this large altarpiece, likely for the Duomo, the most important church in the city. There is a red and white banner near Jesus, who holds a bird in his hand; both are symbols of the Resurrection, his future triumph over death. For devout Christian survivors of the pandemic, this would have been a powerful image of salvation. The Duomo housed the relics of two of the saints depicted here: Zenobius (upper left), the first Bishop of Florence, and the city

Zoroaster (Old Persian: Zarathustra, in modern Persian Zardosht) is generally thought to have lived about the 11th or 10th century BCE. Zoroastrianism is a religion and philosophy based on the teachings of Zoroaster as prophet. The term Zoroastrianism is, in general usage, essentially synonymous with Mazdaism (the worship of Ahura Mazda, exalted by Zoroaster as the supreme divine authority). In Zoroastrianism, the Creator Ahura Mazda is all good, and no evil originates from Him. Thus, in Zoroastrianism good and evil have distinct sources, with evil (druj) trying to destroy the creation of Mazda (asha), and good trying to sustain it. In some form, it served as the national- or state religion of a significant portion of the Iranian people for many centuries.
