Incan Emperor Atahualpa is taken prisoner within the fortified city of Cajamarca. A monk named Vicente de Valverde is said to have attempted to convert the Emperor with a Christian prayer book, which the Emperor threw to the ground. Pizarro and his men then charged into the crowd of attendants, who panicked and were slaughtered. Atahualpa was thrown from his litter and taken prisoner (BSLOC_2020_1_111)

Maximilian I (22 March 1459 - 12 January 1519), the son of Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor, and Eleanor of Portugal, was King of the Romans (also known as King of the Germans) from 1486 and Holy Roman Emperor from 1508 until his death, though he was never in fact crowned by the Pope, the journey to Rome always being too risky. He had ruled jointly with his father for the last ten years of his father's reign, from c. 1483. He expanded the influence of the House of Habsburg through war and his marriage in 1477 to Mary of Burgundy, the heiress to the Duchy of Burgundy, but he also lost the Austrian territories in today's Switzerland to the Swiss Confederacy.

This illustration dates to around 1846 and shows the Northmen discovering grapes in Vinland. Vinland is an old Norse term for the area of coastal North America explored by the Norse Vikings. On such Viking was Leif Erikson (Ericson) who landed there around 1000 A.D. Vinland, or Vineland, reflects the rich soil that allowed for the growing of grapes.

The early 1900s caption reads: "Gunnhild's messengers came to Thorstein." The historical Gunnhild was the wife of Eric Bloodaxe, King of Norway from 930 to 934 AD. She appears in the Icelandic Sagas. She lived during a time of great change and upheaval in Norway. Her father-in-law was Harald Fairhair. Thorstein the Red or Thorstein Olafsson was a viking chieftain who flourished in late ninth-century Scotland. This illustration by Gordon Browne dates to 1913.
