The Hebrew tribes enter Canaan over the Jordan River, Illustration from the Dore Bible 1866. In 1866, the French artist and illustrator Gustave Dore (18321883), published a series of 241 wood engravings for a new deluxe edition of the 1843 French translation of the Vulgate Bible, popularly known as the Bible de Tours. This new edition was known as La Grande Bible de Tours and its illustrations were immensely successful. The Exodus is the founding, or etiological, myth of Israel, its message is that the Israelites were delivered from slavery by Yahweh and therefore belong to him through the Mosaic covenant.

This 19th century illustration shows a Bonfire in Midsummer in 1879. Midsummer is also known as St. John's Day, and the celebration coincides with and focuses on the summer solstice. It is mostly a northern European festival, and the festivities usually take place between June 21 and June 25. It was originally a pagan holiday, but it became, in Christianity, associated with the birth of St. John the Baptist.
