Jesus further shows his acceptance of those rejected by society by inviting Matthewa publican, or toll collectorinto his ministry, as he passes his booth. Not only were these tax collectors considered unscrupulous, but they were also particularly loathed by devout Jews for their status as representatives of the ruling Romans. Tissot has included camels and the hint of a wide-arched gate to underscore Matthew’s location at a geographical (and perhaps, spiritual) crossroads, as well as adding an Eastern flourish. After Christ calls Matthew to his teachings, he takes a meal in the home of his new disciple, an act that occasions the suspicion of devout passersby. In answer to questions of his motives, Jesus merely replies that, like

Although Tissot gave exacting attention to archaeological detail, providing what he intended as historically accurate backdrops for the narrative of Christs life, he also pursued the mystical. At the pool known as the Piscina Probatica, the infirm gather around the edge of the water in the hope of being healed. According to John, an angel stirs the pool, activating its curative powers; the next person to step into the water would be delivered from affliction. Tissots image features two large, translucent hands reaching down into the pool: the bubbles and widening ripples on the waters surface serve as traces of the miraculous phenomenon. While Tissots painting invokes otherworldly ag

The Baptism of Jesus (Baptême de Jésus) James Tissot (French, 1836-1902). The Baptism of Jesus (Baptême de Jésus), 1886-1894. Opaque watercolor over graphite on gray wove paper, Image: 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. (21.6 x 14 cm). According to Matthew, Jesus travels from Galilee to Judaea to be baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. Although John humbly protests and suggests that it is he who should be baptized by Jesus instead, Jesus insists. Here, a dove descends from the heavens as Jesus emerges from the water, while a voice from above calls him my beloved Son.” Perhaps in reference to earlier passages in the Gospels relating the curiosity and suspicion John’s desert ministry inspired in some quarters, several witnesses surreptitiously watch the proceedings through a screen of rushes on the riverbank. Tissot’s text states that John the Baptist and Jesus, cousins often presented as childhood companions in artistic tradition, met again as adults at a place marked with twelve stones,

The Adoration of the Shepherds (L'adoration des bergers) James Tissot (French, 1836-1902). The Adoration of the Shepherds (L'adoration des bergers), 1886-1894. Opaque watercolor on gray wove paper, Image: 6 1/2 x 8 in. (16.5 x 20.3 cm). In Lukes Gospel, the shepherds in the hills and valleys surrounding Bethlehem first learn of the miraculous event from an angel who announces the birth of the Savior. The accompanying angels joyously sing their praise of God and urge good will to men, a passage that gives its name to a well-known hymn, “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” (Glory to God in the Highest). In the text he wrote to accompany this image, Tissot explains the local practices for pasturage in the Middle East, noting that small bands of shepherds gathered around campfires and alternated watches to care for their flocks. Attentive to this practical detail, Tissot casts the faces of his shepherds in the orange glow of their warming fire—a striking contrast to the verdant surroundings of shelt
