Retracing their steps, they find him at the Temple, discoursing freely with the doctors, whom Tissot describes as “specialists in every branch of science, each one famed for his skill in one or other branch of knowledge.” The learned men in this composition eagerly crowd around the young boy, anxious to hear his questions as he enumerates his points on his fingers. Christ Washing the Feet of His Disciples 1720-1730 France. Nicolas Bertin was primarily a painter of religious, mythological, and allegorical subjects. Although trained in the rigorous French academic traditions, he often emulated the broader style of Titian, Paolo Veronese, and other Venetian Renaissance masters.
