Maqama (literally 'assemblies') are an (originally) Arabic literary genre of rhymed prose with intervals of poetry in which rhetorical extravagance is conspicuous. The 10th century author Badi' al-Zaman al-Hamadhani is said to have invented the form, which was extended by al-Hariri of Basra in the next century. Both authors' maqamat center on trickster figures whose wanderings and exploits in speaking to assemblies of the powerful are conveyed by a narrator. Manuscripts of al-Hariri's Maqamat, anecdotes of a roguish wanderer Abu Zayd from Saruj, were frequently illustrated with miniatures.

Saint Martin and Saint Hilary 1430-35 Flemish This roundel, together with three others in the Lehman Collection (1975.1.1906, 1975.1.1907, and 1975.1.1909), and two in The Cloisters Collection (47.101.63 and 47.101.64), form part of the same series of early fifteenth-century Franco-Flemish embroideries depicting scenes from the life of Saint Martin. Originally part of a much larger ensemble (thirty-six roundels and panels are now dispersed among public and private collections), the embroideries may have decorated a liturgical vestment, an altar frontal, or possibly a combination thereof, constituting a set of vestments. Having left the Roman army, Martin devoted himself to religious life and became a disciple of Saint Hilary, Bishop of Poitiers in France. Saint Martin is portrayed kneeling before the Bishop, who is ordaining him as acolyte. This series of embroideries, if not originally intended for a liturgical garment, may have embellished an altar frontal, similar to the blue coveri

Our Lady of Cocharcas on the Altar Arequipa School. Our Lady of Cocharcas on the Altar, 18th century. Oil on canvas, 34 7/8 x 30 1/8in. (88.6 x 76.5cm). Indigenous traditions gave rise to distinctly Spanish American iterations of Catholic faith. In the stories of local cults, Christianized Indians figure prominently as witnesses to miraculous apparitions of the Virgin Mary and demonstrations of her healing powers. This painting shows a statue of Our Lady of Cocharcas, whose cult following developed after Sebastián Quimichi, a young Indian, made a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Copacabana. He purchased a replica of the miraculous statue and returned to his hometown of Cocharcas, where it was the source of miracles and developed a cult following as Our Lady of Cocharcas. A narrative scene at the bottom of the altar on which the statue stands shows Quimichi, his importance emphasized by his exaggerated size. Las tradiciones indígenas dieron lugar a variaciones de la fe católica con caracterís

The Ramayana is a story as old as time and - at least in the Indian subcontinent and across much of Southeast Asia - of unparalleled popularity. More than two thousand three hundred years ago the scholar-poet Valmiki sat down to write his definitive epic of love and war. The poem Valmiki composed is styled the Ramayana, or 'Romance of Rama' in Sanskrit. In its present form, the Sanskrit version consists of some 24,000 couplets divided into seven books. The Reamker is the Khmer version of this epic and has an important influence on Cambodian dance, literature, art and drama.
