Emperor Heraclius Denied Entry into Jerusalem 1485-1495 Netherlands. This panel recounts the adventures of the Byzantine emperor Heraclius, who rescued the True Cross and returned it to Jerusalem after its capture by ChosroÎs, king of Persia. These scenes were probably part of an extended narrative on an altarpiece dedicated to the Holy Cross, a relic that was much venerated in the Middle Ages.In this scene, the emperor brings the True Cross back to Jerusalem in triumph. However, an angel bars his way, pointing out the vanity of his procession in comparison to Christís humble entry into the city. Only when the emperor dismounted and approached in humility was he allowed to enter, a scene that was no doubt once part of the sequence. Here the emperor is identifiable by the double-headed eagle, which was an emblem of both the Holy Roman emperor of the day and past emperors.. Tempera and oil on panel .

Christ Carrying the Cross from a set of "The Passion" 1598 Design based on a woodcut by Albrecht Dürer German With subtlety and dexterity, this tapestry's weavers- who apparently used the monograms AR and ICM- borrowed, enlarged, reversed, and added color to Albrecht Dürers design for the woodcut of Christ carrying the Cross in his 1511 Small Passion series. This panel is part of a group of similarly sized scenes from the New Testament, woven across more than two decades, all closely based upon printed prototypes by Hans Baldung Grien, Hans Schäufelein, Martin Schongauer and Hans Wechtlin, as well as by Dürer. Together with other surviving tapestry panels now in the Museum Haus Löwenberg in Gengenbach and spread across private collections, these small, captioned Biblical scenes were probably made on speculation for sale to Protestant individuals and religious institutions in the Strasburg area around the turn of the seventeenth century.. Charlemagne (2 April 742 - 28 January 814 CE), also known as Charles the Great (Latin: Carolus or Karolus Magnus, French: Charles Le Grand or Charlemagne, German: Karl der Grosse, Italian: Carlo Magno or Carlomagno) or Charles I, was King of the Franks who united most of Western Europe during the Middle Ages and laid the foundations for modern France and Germany. He took the Frankish throne from 768 and became King of Italy from 774. From 800 he became the first Holy Roman Emperor - the first recognized Roman emperor in Western Europe since the collapse of the Western Roman Empire three centuries earlier. The expanded Frankish state he founded is called the Carolingian Empire. The oldest son of Pepin the Short and Bertrada of Laon, Charlemagne became king in 768 following the death of his father. He was initially co-ruler with his brother Carloman I. Carloman's sudden death in 771 under unexplained circumstances left Charlemagne as the undisputed ruler of the Frankish Kingdom. Charlema

An Episode from the Life of Saint Giovanni Gualberto Attributed to Niccolò di Pietro Gerini Italian The founder of the Vallombrosan branch of the Benedictine order, Giovanni Gualberto is shown with the muderer of his brother before a crucifix. Instead of avenging his brother's death, the Saint forgave the murderer, and the image of the crucified Christ is said to have approved this act of charity. The picture was probably painted for a Vallombrosan church, but its composition seems to derive from a scene by Giovanni del Biondo in an altarpiece in Santa Croce, Florence. It dates from the last years of the fourteenth century. Despite signs of wear the condition is, in general, fair for a work of this size and date..
