Although Jesus took on several followers early in his ministry, in this painting he is shown formally ordaining twelve men to help spread his teachings. As earlier temptation episodes foretold, the devil left Jesus for a season” but reappeared time and again to test him in the form of possessed outcasts. Here, in a barren landscape pocked with caves and tombs—a terrain familiar from Tissot’s sketches of the Valley of Hinnom—Jesus encounters two men afflicted with demons, while a herd of swine wanders on the horizon. Tissot notes that the Gentiles, sometimes in the employ of Jews, tended swine in these lands, despite Jewish tradition, which regarded the animals as unclean. According to Matthew, so fearsome were these possessed men that few dared to roam in these lands. Nude, emaciated, and long-haired, the men jump and flail before Jesus and the disciples. The Romans told of a Vestal Virgin named Tarpeia who had betrayed her people, the Romans, and helping the neighboring Sabines to enter Rome. With no love for traitors, the Sabines did as they promised: to give Tarpeia as a reward what they had on their arms. While Tarpeia wanted their gold bracelets, the Sabines gave her their shields and killed her. The Rock was then given the name Tarpeian Rock and convicted criminals were hurled to their death from it. This illustration is taken from Lays of Ancient Rome by Lord Macaulay, who died in 1859.
