Set (also spelled Seth) was and the ancient Egyptian god of desert, storms, and darkness. Jealous of his brother Osiris, he hosted a gathering and brought a beautiful coffin. He challenged all to try the coffin for size. The one who fit it perfectly could have it. Osiris was wary and was the last to tryonce inside, Set closed and locked the coffin and set it adrift on the Nile River. Isis, the wife and brother of Osiris, searched for the coffin, found it embedded in a massive tree trunk (or in a column in Lebanon - a cedar of Lebanon, according to some tales). She cut out the coffin, but Set found Osiris and choped him into pieces, which Isis collected and made whole - hence Osiris is the god of death and rebirth. Esther (Hebrew: אֶסְתֵּרr), born Hadassah, is the eponymous heroine of the Biblical 'Book of Esther'. According to the Bible, she was a Jewish queen of the Persian king Ahasuerus. Ahasuerus is traditionally identified with Xerxes I (r. 486-465 BCE) during the time of the Achaemenid empire. Her story is the basis for the celebration of Purim in Jewish tradition.

Edward William Lane (1801-76) was a British Orientalist, translator and Arabic scholar who lived in Ottoman Cairo from 1825-28. So fascinated was he with Egypt, he dressed as an Ottoman Turk and spent much time sketching the backstreets of Cairo. Upon his return to England he translated the novel 'Arabian Nights' '1001 nights' and 'Selections from the Qur'an'.

An authentic oriental rug is a handmade carpet that is either knotted with pile or woven without pile. By definition - Oriental rugs are rugs that come from the orient. The simple definition of the term would be - rugs that come from (were made in) an Asian Country such as: China and Vietnam in the east to Turkey, Maghreb countries, Cyprus and Iran in the west and the Caucasus in the north to India in the south. People from different cultures, countries, racial groups and religious faiths are involved in the production of oriental rugs. Oriental rugs are organized by origin: Persian rugs, Arab rugs, Anatolian rugs, Kurdish rugs, Caucasian rugs, Central Asian rugs, Turkestanian (Turkmen, Turkoman) rugs, Chinese rugs, Tibetan rugs and Indian rugs.

A 'harem' is not a bordello, seraglio or brothel, but refers to the women's quarters, usually in a polygynous household, which are forbidden to men. It originated in the Near East and is typically associated in the Western world with the Ottoman Empire. Female seclusion in Islam is emphasized to the extent that any unlawful breaking into that privacy is haram ie, 'forbidden'. A Muslim harem does not necessarily consist solely of women with whom the head of the household has sexual relations (wives and concubines), but also their young offspring, other female relatives or odalisques, which are the concubines' servants. The harem may either be a palatial complex, as in Romantic tales, in which case it includes staff (women and eunuchs), or simply their quarters, in the Ottoman tradition separated from the men's selamlik. A hammam is a common bath house.
