An outspoken defender of principled politicians, Nast targeted leaders whom he deemed unethical through his biting illustrations. These works harnessed popular references that could be easily understood by a partially illiterate audience. Invoking the biblical saying, "Satan, Dont Get Thee Behind Me," Nast illustrates Democratic candidate Horace Greeley on his knees begging the devil to assist him in defeating General Ulysses S. A Bogeyman is a common allusion to a mythical creature in many cultures used by adults to frighten children into good behaviour. The Lost Sheep (The Parables of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ) 1864 After Sir John Everett Millais British It took Millais seven years to design twenty images inspired by New Testament Parables for the Dalziel Brothers, and the resulting prints are considered pinnacles of wood engraved illustration. The artist wrote to his publishers, "I can do ordinary drawings as quickly as most men, but these designs can scarcely be regarded in the same lighteach Parable I illustrate perhaps a dozen times before I fix [the image." After completing a design, Millais transferred it to a woodblock coated with Chinese white for skilled engravers to carve. Finally, he reviewed proofs and final adjustments were made before the final printing.The Parable of the Lost Sheep appears in Matthew 18:12-14 and Luke:15:3-7, and tells of a shepherd who leaves his flock to seek one lost sheep, then rejoices when he finds it. Tuscany Grosseto Sovana SS. Pietro e Paolo, Cathedral. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 This cathedral was largely built in the 12th and 13th centuries over a preexisting 9th-11th century structure. Exterior views of the romanesque facade focus on the portal and apse where older medieval architectural sculptures have been reused. Interior views also include reused sculptural fragments. Most views are of the 12th-century capitals which have geometric, foliate, animal and Old Testament figural motifs including Adam, Eve, Daniel, Abraham and Isaac. Prints in the Hutzel collection include paintings, the tomb effigy of S. Mamiliano, a holy water font (1456), a baptismal font (1484) and a marble tabernacle (1510). The vision of Daniel. In a nightly dream, the prophet Daniel sees how the four winds brother the sea. Four large animals appear between the waves. The first beast looks like a lion with eagle wings, the second on a bear, the third on a leopard with four cups and four bird wings on his back and the fourth has great iron teeth and ten horns and tackled or trapted everything that came on his way .
