Two carriers of cinnamon bundles, Esaias Boursse, 1662  Outside, in an unevenly sloping terrain are two men. Both wear a carrying bat (pingo) over their shoulder. Of the bale of cinnamon bark rolled on the front and back, only those are drawn at the front. The men belong to the Singalese profession of cinnamon peelers of the caste of the chalias or salagama. The peeled inner bark of the cinnamon tree was curled up during drying and then stabbed into pipes - the men wear them bundled on their pingolat.
