Swan-Uppers Go Up The Thames - Members of the Vintners' and Dyers' Companies in their traditional costumes and flying the Swan banners leave London's River Thames for a trip up river to Henley. But it is not a pleasure trip. Ever since 1500 these two companies have had the right to own a proportion of the swans on the river and so each year they perform the swan-upping task - they round up all the swans, check and mark them.
