Linen from Tutankhamun's Embalming Cache ca. 1336-1327 B.C. New Kingdom In December 1907 Theodore M. Davis, a wealthy American who was funding excavations in the Valley of the Kings, discovered a small pit near the tomb of Seti I. Inside the pit were approximately a dozen large sealed whitewashed storage jars (09.184.1). Among other things, the jars contained bags of natron (a kind of salt), pieces of linen with hieratic inscriptions dated to Years 6 and 8 of a king named Tutankhamun (throne name Nebkheperure). At the time, almost nothing was know about Tutankhamun, and Davis declared that he had discovered the king's tomb.Davis received a number of the jars and their contents in the division of finds and, in 1909, he gave most of his share to the Metropolitan Museum. It was only later that Herbert Winlock, the field director of the Museum's excavations at Thebes, realized that the natron and linen were embalming refuse from the mummification of Tutankhamun.This piece of linen cloth is

(173.99 × 49.21 cm) (mount, without roller), Ink and color on paper (painting), ink and gold on paper (poem card), Japan, 17th century, An aristocrat and famous poet, Minamoto Shunrai (1055-1129), also known as Minamoto Toshiyori, lived during Japans classical Heian period (794-1185). He is known for composing innovative verses and for compiling the imperial poetry anthology Kinyō wakashū (Collection of Golden Leaves) in the 1120s, at the behest of Emperor Shirakawa. In this small portrait Shunrai wears the clothes of a classical male courtier. One of his poems is brushed in flowing calligraphy on a poem card (shikishi) affixed to the upper left corner.

Sketchbook of American and Italian Subjects William Trost Richards (American, 1833-1905). Sketchbook of American and Italian Subjects, 1855-1856. Sketchbook containing drawings in graphite on wove paper, 4 1/16 x 6 5/8 x 3/8 in. (10.3 x 16.8 x 1 cm). Richards first traveled to Europe in 1855, remaining abroad for a year and spending most of the time in Italy. Like so many artists before him, Richards was overjoyed to be in Florence: I have not as yet realized that I am in Italy that all the dreams of a boyhood are fulfilled.” Richards carried this small sketchbook on a walking tour in the Apennine mountains in October 1855. The carefully drawn vista shown here of the broad valley through which the Arno river winds reminded Richards, always quick to compare American and European landscape scenery, of the view of the Hudson from the Catskill Mountain House. Death report concerning George Marinus Tamson, Anonymous, 1939 Fracture cardboard printing

Kilt or Sash. Dimensions: L. 188 cm (74 in.); w. 55 cm (21 5/8 in.). Dynasty: Dynasty 18. Reign: Joint reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III. Date: ca. 1479-1458 B.C..This length of cloth has a woven selvage along one side. The other side and both ends are finished with rolled hems. There is also a weaver's mark woven into one corner of the fabric. Theis is probably a garment that was tied around the waist as a sash or a kilt and it was found with a shirt (similar to 36.3.174) in a bundle of linen that was placed inside the coffin of a middle-aged man whose name was not preserved. He had been buried on the hillside below the tomb of Senenmut (see 36.3.252). A number of burials were discovered on this hillside, including the tomb containing Senenmut's mother, Hatnefer (36.3.1), his father, Ramose, and six other family members. It is possible that the un-named middle-aged man was another relative or a member of Senenmut's household who was buried where his spirit could benefit from the d
