Graphite, chalk, and opaque watercolor on medium-weight, beige, wove paper, sketchbook, sketchbook: 4 7/8 x 6 3/4 x 5/16 in. (12.4 x 17.1 x 0.8 cm). A landscape painter who devoted himself to the careful study of nature, Johnson traveled throughout the Northeast collecting sketches that he would then use to create highly detailed paintings in his studio. Some of his haunts included the Catskill and Adirondack mountains in New York and the White Mountains in New Hampshire, where this sketch was made. American Art July-October 1851

Album with faces on Venice, Livorno, Naples and Rome; Urbis Venetiar Prospect Celebrior. Album with 69 performances and one table of contents on 70 album blades. It concerns three Italian series of faces on Venice with a total of 39 prints and four title prints, followed by a set of 26 French prints with palaces and monuments in Venice, Livorno, Naples and Rome. Cardboard band, lined with leather and decorated with marbled paper, with front and back a blank board cover. On the front cover leaf an ex libris of Antonii Thomas.
