The Oriel Window, South Gallery, Lacock Abbey. Artist: William Henry Fox Talbot (British, Dorset 1800-1877 Lacock). Dimensions: Sheet: 8.5 × 11.6 cm (3 3/8 × 4 9/16 in.), irregularly trimmed. Date: probably 1835.This mysterious view through the diamond-paned oriel window of Talbot's home is one of the earliest photographs in existence--a remarkable relic of the inventor's earliest attempts to make pictures solely through the action of light and chemicals. He brushed a piece of writing paper with salt and silver nitrate and placed it in a small wooden camera stationed on a mantel opposite the window for an exposure that may have lasted hours. The image is tonally reversed--a negative, though the term did not yet exist--as the paper darkened most where it recorded the bright light of the windows. The Fall of Icarus November 29, 1834 John Doyle Lord Chancellor Brougham is here cast as Icarus falling through the air after flying too close to the sun (the sun in this image contains the face of William IV). His collapsing wings are lettered "Edinburgh Review," "Society of useful knowledge," "Penny Encyclopædia," "Morning Chronicle," and "Globe," all journals to which the Chancellor contributed articles to praised the king (and by extension himself). The image suggests that recent speeches given during a provicinal tour implied too great a degree of familiarity with the monarch, whose hot response is here to melt the wax of his minister's great seal, causing him to fall from office.. Influenced in part by Henri Matisse, whose paintings he saw exhibited in Berlin in 1909, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner developed a radical and forceful pictorial language of flattened space, expressive figural distortion, and vivid color. This composition recalls traditional, idyllic pastorals while also reflecting his own free lifestyle at a lake near Dresden, where he relaxed and bathed nude with friends. Kirchner claimed that the poet Walt Whitman was responsible for my outlook on life” and that Whitman’s sexually charged 1855 poem Leaves of Grass was and still is my comfort and encouragement.” These lines from the poem seem to reflect the atmosphere of his print: I will go to the bank by the wood and become undisguised and naked, I am mad for it to be in contact with me.” E

Study of a Standing Man with Headcloth and Two Studies of his Hands. Artist: Wilhelm Schadow (German, Berlin 1788-1862 Düsseldorf). Dimensions: sheet: 14 13/16 x 10 3/8 in. (37.7 x 26.4 cm). Date: early to mid-19th century.Finely executed with a silvery graphite and gently highlighted with white chalk, this drawing presents a life study of a sacerdotal figure in a romanticized medieval headcloth. At the bottom the artist repeated an enlarged and detailed study of the figure's hands. The figure on top was then squared in black chalk for enlargement. Schadow was a main exponent of the Nazarene movement in Germany, which was driven by an authentic admiration for the Italian Renaissance and its tradition of drawing. He was also the celebrated director of the Düsseldorfer Malerschule (Düsseldorf School of Painting) during the 1830s and 1840s. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
