Iris with butterflies. Handcoloured copperplate botanical engraving from "Nederlandsch Bloemwerk" (Dutch Flower Arrangements), Amsterdam, J.B. Elwe, 1794. The artist of the fine plates is a mystery: the title bouquet has the signature of Paul Theodor van Brussel (1754-1795), the Dutch flower painter, and one auricula is "drawn from life" by A. Bres. According to Hunt, 30 plates show the influence of the famous French artist Nicolas Robert (1614-1685).

Still Life of Fruit and Flowers. Right before Empress Catherine the Great of Russia bought Sir Robert Walpoles entire art collection, Richard Earlom made large prints of several of the famous paintings in it as mementos. Among them was this 1723 still life by Jan van Huysum. Earlom worked in mezzotint, a technique also called the ‘black manner. This method made it possible to produce soft, subtle transitions between a wealth of grey tones, creating a velvety black surface.
