"Aquatic Birds at a Pool", Folio from the Davis Album late 17th or early 18th century This album page contains a highly naturalistic image of water birds surrounded by a floral border that incorporates the images of two figures that appear to be based on European sources. Of the four pages from this album with floral borders, two are inscribed with the name of 'Aliquli Jabbadar, one with the name of Muhammad Zaman, and this one is uninscribed. Although 'Ali Quli Jabbadar and Muhammad Zaman were contemporaries and worked in similar styles in the 1660s, 'Ali Quli's work contains striking images of birds which suggests that he may have painted this image. The figures in the border, which appears to be from the 18th century, may derive from European prints depicting the young John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene.. The Yeti or Abominable Snowman is an ape-like cryptid said to inhabit the Himalayan region of Nepal, and Tibet. The names Yeti and Meh-Teh are commonly used by the people indigenous to the region, and are part of their history and mythology. Stories of the Yeti first emerged as a facet of Western popular culture in the 19th century. Migoi or Mi-go (Wylie: mi rgod, ZYPY: Migo/Mirgo) translates as 'wild man'.

This image captures the culminating moment in the passionate love affair between Irans legendary King Khusraw II (Sasanian dynasty, r. 590-628) and Shirin, an Armenian princess. After days of longing, Khusraw coincidentally encounters Shirin for the first time as she bathes in a pond. Entranced by each others beauty, the lovers remain speechless. Although rooted in oral tradition, the tale of Khusraw and Shirin found its greatest expression as one of the five narrative poems of the Khamsa (Quintet), composed by the celebrated Nizami of Ganja (1141-1209), one of Irans greatest masters of romantic poetry.
