Sagittarius (section of a zodiac frieze) 1582 Italian, Milan Typically Venetian are the punched grounds against which the forms dance on these frieze sections. More sinuously elegant than reliefs by leading Venetian bronze sculptors of the generation active about 1500-1520Alessandro Leopardi, Vittore Gambello (known as Camelio), and the Master of the Barbarigo Reliefsthe present two (see also Capricorn, 2004.440.1) may date slightly later but are still informed by High Renaissance standards of expression and orga nization. Lazio Rieti Cantalupo in Sabina Palazzo Camuccini9. Hutzel, Max 1960-1990 Post-medieval: Architecture. The palazzo was built by the architect Giovan Domenico Bianchi (16th century) for Cardinal Pierdonato Cesi, on the site of a medieval castle, parts of which were used in the new structure. The facade consists of a portico surmounted by a loggia. Antiquities: Sculpture. A collection of ancient artifacts is housed in the palazzo. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Elector Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria on Horseback cast 1707 Roger Schabol This bronze equestrian group represents Elector of Bavaria Maximilian II Emanuel (r. 1679-1726) on rearing steed, triumphantly vanquishing a fallen enemy sprawled below. Maximilian likely commissioned the work directly from the artist, Roger Schabol, to commemorate the Electors 1686 military victory over the Ottoman Turks at the Siege of Belgrade. An enigmatic sculptor and founder active at the court of Louis XIV, Schabol signed and dated the work along the front edge of the base. Little is known about the artist, making this superbly cast bronze an invaluable contribution to his oeuvre. Schabol came from Brussels to Paris in the 1680s, where by 1687 he is documented as part of a team of sculptors active on the Parterre dEau at Versailles. Date: 1901, cast by March 1907.In 1901 Remington modeled this Cheyenne Indian racing on horseback. The muscular rider, wearing only a loincloth and moccasins, leans forward, clutching a spear and a quirt. His mount is depicted at full gallop, or "burning the air," as Remington described it: ears back, tail flowing, and all four hooves off the ground. The buffalo robe that serves as a saddle trails off the airborne horse to its right and functions as the means of linking figures to the base. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The Rattlesnake Frederic Remington American 1905, revised 1908; this cast, before 1939 The Rattlesnake” depicts a horse twisted in a reaction of fright to a rattlesnake as the rider grabs the horse’s mane with his left hand and holds his hat on with his right. This statuette was second only to The Broncho Buster” (1986.81.2) in popularity, with some 100 casts produced before Remington’s original models were destroyed in 1921. Bear Cub Grooming. Artist: Paul Wayland Bartlett (American, New Haven, Connecticut 1865-1925 Paris). Dimensions: 9 1/2 x 9 5/8 x 10 5/8 in. (24.1 x 24.4 x 27 cm). Date: 1887.In 1889 Bartlett earned a grand prix for his lifesize bronze Bohemian Bear Tamer at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. The multifigure sculpture, now on view in the Charles Engelhard Court of the American Wing, was purchased for the Metropolitan in 1891 (acc. no. 91.14). Bartlett capitalized on its success by casting reductions after the Gypsy figure and standing bear as well as the seated bear cub; he was one of the first American sculptors to generate income by issuing such editions. His sophisticated knowledge of animal anatomy, expertly revealed in these statuettes, was acquired through study with the leading French animal sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet. Greyhound, 1657 This image is a life -sized, vibrant -lying Hazewind dog with a collar, on which the coat of arms of the Antwerp family is cut. The image carries the monogram A.Q. From Artus Quellinus and the year 1657. The statue is an extremely rare example of a sculpted animal portrait in its actual size. The presence of the Roose weapon shield, the monogram of Quellinus and the year clearly point out that it has been made as an autonomous work. This is confirmed by the lack of any trace of old confirmation.
