Warrior on Horseback ca. 1540 Attributed to Desiderio da Firenze Italian During the Renaissance, monumental bronze equestrian statues from Roman antiquity were highly admired for their technical virtuosity and as celebrations of triumphant ancient heroes. Several equestrian statues were created in emulation of Roman prototypes to honor contemporary rulers and military leaders. The small-scale warrior on horseback was a popular variation on the colossal equestrian statue.Although the rider is now bolted to the horse, this horse and rider may not have been designed with this pairing in mind, as the rider appears rather small in comparison to the horse. Aquamanile in the Form of a Falconer on Horseback 13th century North German Derived from the Latin words for water (aqua) and hand (manus), an aquamanile (plural: aquamanilia) is an animal- or human-shaped water vessel used in hand washing, an essential component of religious and secular rituals in the Middle Ages. Aquamanilia were the first cast vessels of medieval Europe. Usually cast in copper alloy through the lostwax process (cire perdue), the hundreds of surviving examples date from the twelfth through fifteenth century. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has one of the most important collections of aquamanilia in the world, with examples at The Cloisters and in the main building on Fifth Avenue, in both the medieval galleries and the Lehman Collection.Although compromised by the loss of the horses hooves and by significant wear to the surface, this aquamanile in the form of a youthful falconer remains a striking work. The monument was commissioned in 1874 by the Society of the Army of the Cumberland and unveiled in 1879; it stands in Thomas Circle at the intersections of Massachusetts and Vermont Avenues and 14th and M Streets in Washington, D.C. In Wards preliminary concept, illustrated in the Metropolitans bronze, the horse is posed so that the forequarters are elevated on the gentle incline of the base. The tail and mane are more windblown in the monumental bronze, but the two versions share the animated posture of the head. The sharply defined wrinkles on the horse's neck and the taut facial muscles of the rider reveal their tension; even the angular bent of their limbs unites man and animal.
