Lucretia 1500-1515 Circle of Conrad Meit of Worms As court sculptor to Margaret of Austria in Mechelen, Meit was a major proponent of Renaissance style, noted for his fusion of German realism and Italian idealism. His depictions of sensuous female nudes were much emulated. Lucretia, a beautiful and virtuous noblewoman of ancient Rome, committed suicide after being raped by the king's son, which set off the rebellion that established the Roman Republic. Triton Blowing a Conch Shell. This triton, a sea creature in the retinue of the god Neptune, is one of sixteen sculptures that together once formed part of a monumental fountain. The huge complex stood in front of Frederiksborg Castle in Denmark, but in 1659 Swedish soldiers took the statues as war booty to Stockholm. The triton originally perched on the edge of a basin, and water spouted from the shell he is blowing.

Neo-classical sculptor William Theed shows her mourning, head bowed in grief, already knowing that her sacrifice is necessary. The subject had particular resonance in Britain in 1805 when Theed first exhibited the model for this bronze at the Royal Academy. Young Faun with Heron. Artist: Frederick William MacMonnies (American, New York 1863-1937 New York). Dimensions: 27 1/4 x 15 x 9 1/4 in. (69.2 x 38.1 x 23.5 cm). Date: 1889-90, cast 1890.MacMonnies produced a large bronze "Young Faun with Heron" for Naumkeag, a house in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, designed by Stanford White for Ambassador and Mrs. Joseph H. Choate. The ancient pagan motif of a child wrestling with a bird is recapitulated in this dynamic reduction. The taunting faun, identified as such only by its wreath of leaves, firmly grasps the heron's neck and restrains one of its legs. The bird protests by clenching its talons and opening its beak, perhaps to emit a cry. Its richly textured feathers contrast with the faun's lithe form and supple flesh. Young children enjoyed great favor, whether in mythological form, as baby Herakles or Eros, or in genre scenes, playing with each other or with pets. This Eros, god of love, has been brought down to earth and disarmed, a conception considerably different from that of the powerful, often cruel, and capricious being so often addressed in Archaic poetry. One of the few bronze statues to have survived from antiquity, this figure of a plump baby in relaxed pose conveys a sense of the immediacy and naturalistic detail that the medium of bronze made possible.
