"Joseph," Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekht, Chief of the "Nez Percé" Indians 1889; cast 1906 Olin Levi Warner American Chief Joseph (ca. 1840-1904) was hailed for his dignified leadership of the Nez Perce during settlement disputes with the U.S. government in the 1870s. His resistance to relocation to Idaho reservation land inspired sympathy from many Americans, especially after his forced surrender in 1877 just miles from Canada, where he was attempting to retreat. Joseph eventually settled on the Colville reservation in northern Washington. He posed for Warner in 1889 while both were in Portland, Oregon. The sculptor represented the chief faithfully: his impressive profile, rendered in high relief, features alert eyes and loose flesh that captures subtleties of light and shadow. The sitters given name, Hin-mah-toó-yah-lat-kekht (Thunder Rolling Down the Mountain), appears alongside "Joseph.". "Joseph," Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekht, Chief of the "Nez Percé" Indians 13151
