The Artist's Father and Mother 1879, cast 1897-98 Olin Levi Warner American Levi (1810-1891) and Sarah Baldwin (1819-1891) Warner, a simple, industrious couple, were farmers and lay preachers. They settled in Westminster Depot, Massachusetts, in 1868, the year before their eldest son Olin began his artistic training in Paris. Warner probably modeled this portrait during one of his frequent visits to his parents in the mid- and late 1870s. The bond between the aged sitters is inferred by the close overlapping of forms and parallel arrangement of facial features. The figures are centered on a subtly textured background. Warners trademark cursive inscription sweeps along the edge of the medallion below and to the right of the portraits.. The Artist's Father and Mother. Olin Levi Warner (American, West Suffield, Connecticut 1844-1896 New York). American. 1879, cast 1897-98. Bronze

George Gordon, Lord Byron. Culture: Italian, probably Rome. Dimensions: Overall: 1 7/8 x 1 5/8 in. (4.8 x 4.1 cm); visible cameo (confirmed): 38.1 x 33.4 mm. Date: ca. 1820.This portrait could date any time between the publication of Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1812-18), which brought the poet global fame, and his death in 1824. Byron's physical attractions were acknowledged by many, but as one observer, Lady Blessington, said, "I am sure that if ten individuals undertook the task of describing Byron, no two, of the ten, would agree in their verdict respecting him." The long nose, thinning temple hair, and unruly forelock are beyond question Byron's, but his apparition in a toga does not seem to refer to any known painted or engraved likeness. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Antoninus Pius (Titus Aurelius Fulvus Boionius Arrius Antoninus, 86-161) () mid-late 16th century Italian The Italian Renaissance brought with it a wholehearted embrace of classical antiquity throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Emulation of ancient cameos played a large part. Carvers invested ancient myths with increasingly refined compositions and techniques, paying close attention to the latest archaeological discoveries. Demand for Italian carvers took them to all the courts of Europe. Milan in particular developed a taste for cameos with wondrous atmospheric effects.. Date: 1887-88, cast 1898.Saint-Gaudens met noted author Robert Louis Stevenson after reading his "New Arabian Nights," published in 1882. The sculptor recalled in his "Reminiscences": "My introduction to these stories set me aflame as few things in literature. So when I subsequently found that my friend, Mr. Will Hicok Low knew Stevenson quite well, I told him that, if Stevenson ever crossed to this side of the water, I should consider it an honor if he would allow me to make his portrait." After arriving in America, Stevenson agreed to sit for Saint-Gaudens, without hesitation. The author deemed the finished relief a "speaking likeness." He also thought the inscribed verses (a poem by Stevenson dedicated to Low, their mutual friend) "looked remarkably well." Saint-Gaudens depicted Stevenson reclining in bed, cigarette poised in hand,
