The Boy c 1900-1902 United States. This fountain sculpture is one of an edition of at least four that were produced collaboratively by the painter Elihu Vedder and the sculptor Charles Keck. The two artists met in Rome, where Vedder lived, while Keck was studying at the American Academy. The sculpture is one of the many decorative art objects that Vedder designed during his career; others include door knockers, bell pulls, and firebacks. This work, however, is the only large-scale piece produced from one of his designs. Originally nude, the figure was adorned with a modest scarf sometime after it was cast.. Bronze . Diana with a Hound 1603-11 Barthélemy Prieur French Prieur executed a Diana with a Stag for the Fountain of Diana at the chteau de Fontainebleau (1602-3). Four stags heads and four alert hounds by Pierre I Biard adorn its pedestal. It is possible that the present model is a conflation of these efforts and a nod toward the ancient marble known as the Diana of Versailles.. Diana with a Hound 191166

Yashoda with the Infant Krishna early 12th century India (Tamil Nadu, Pudukkottai and Tanjavur districts) This tender image of maternal affection depicts the child Krishna being nursed by his foster mother, Yashoda. In infancy Krishna had been hidden from the murderous king Kamsa of Mathura to be raised in safety by foster parents. In the repertoire of South Indian processional bronzes cast during the Chola period, this subject is rarely represented. The sophisticated modeling, casting, and tooling link this work to Chola bronzes of the late eleventh and twelfth centuries. Immortals Riding Dragons Section of a Tomb Pediment 206 CE-220 CE China. These triangular sculptures originally fit under the pitched roof of a burial chamber constructed of clay bricks. The position of similar panels discovered intact suggests that they originally formed two ends of a pediment that divided a chamber in half. The panels are carved and painted to depict winged figures mounted on dragons striding over hills or waves. In Han mythology, such beings are described as immortals (xian). Having achieved eternal life, these immortals were endowed with the power to fly and roamed freely about the universe. The depiction of these remarkable beings in tombs reflects a widespread belief that the soul of the deceased could leave its earth-bound existence, ascend to heaven, and become an immortal. The ascent of the soul to the realm of the immortals is a major theme in Han art.. Gray earthenware with traces of slip and polychrome pigments .

The Cheyenne 1901, cast by March 1907 Frederic Remington American In 1901 Remington modeled this Cheyenne man racing on horseback. The muscular rider, wearing only a loincloth and moccasins, leans forward, clutching a spear and a quirt. His mount is depicted at full gallop, or burning the air,” as Remington described it: ears back, tail flowing, and all four hooves off the ground. The buffalo robe that serves as a saddle trails off the airborne horse to its right and functions as the means of linking figures to the base.. The Cheyenne. W. Martin and Brothers (British, 1873-1915). Date: 1896.Determined that pottery vessels should be regarded as true works of art, avant-garde ceramicists in France in the last decades of the nineteenth century transformed their craft into an intellectual and emotional endeavor. The pioneers of this revival were Jean Carriès, Ernest Chaplet, Théodore Deck, and Auguste Delaherche. These revolutionary artist-potters embraced artisanal traditions while pursuing lost techniques through exhaustive experimentation. Reacting to what they viewed as an excessive and improper use of ornament, they celebrated the simplicity and sincerity of their medium, following the tenets of the Art Nouveau style taking place in Europe. Based on the principles of the British Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau ar

Figure: Bird of Prophecy (Ahianmwen-oro) 16th-19th century Edo peoples At its origins, the centralized city-state of Benin was founded by Edo-speaking peoples. The accounts by official court historians and descriptions provided by visitors evoke a vibrant cultural center continually redefined by its leadership through shifting internal and external power dynamics. According to oral tradition, circa 1300, Edo chiefs are reputed to have reached out to the leader of neighboring Ife, Oranmiyan, to establish a new divinely sanctioned royal dynasty. Since then, the investiture of Benins rulers to the title of obas has conferred upon them at once a role of chief priest officiating in important religious ceremonies and presiding over an elaborate structure of palace officials. During the fifteenth century reign of Oba Ewuare, Benins armies were formed and the fortification of its capital with a massive wall undertaken. In parallel, delegations of Portuguese traders assiduously sought to secu

Date: 1883-85; cast 1901.The Munich-trained Niehaus modeled Caestus in Rome, combining the inspiration of ancient sculpture with his penchant for anatomical realism. The work depicts a rigidly posed athlete preparing for a fight by binding leather straps in a crisscross pattern around his forearms. This arrangement of straps, known as a caestus, was the ancient Roman equivalent of the modern day boxing glove. Lead or iron weights were often secured over the knuckles to increase the impact of the blows. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Mask late 18th-early 19th century French The monumentality of this fragment belies its size, and the powerful Medusa head illustrates that the distinction between sculpture and the decorative arts cannot always be clearly drawn. This head, with its agonized expression, may have been part of a clock with the figures of Perseus and his bride, Andromeda. The Greek hero slew the gorgon Medusa and afterward saved Andromeda from a sea monster..
