Medal: Pietro Albano model 1472 Savelli Sperandio Italian Sperandio di Bartolommeo Savelli was an Italian medallist, architect, sculptor, painter, bronze and cannon caster. He was the son of a Roman goldsmith, Bartolommeo di Sperandio Savelli. Sperandio is first mentioned as a goldsmith at Ferrara in 1445 and again in 1447. He appears to have returned to Mantua at some point and to have been employed by Borso d'Este, Marquess of Ferrara, by the early 1460s. As indicated by the inscription, the medal portrays one Pietro Albano, who could possibly be identified as the famous thirteenth-century Italian physician, philosopher, and astrologer, whose activity in Padua marked the rise of city as a center for medical studies. The reverse shows a pensive Mercury sitting on a bale.The piece was possibly cast after a lead original in the seventeenth or eighteenth century.. Medal: Pietro Albano 460998

Like Pisanello, who had produced medals for the Malatesta, Matteo was also active as a medallist at the Rimini court. Empress Maria 1575 Medalist: Antonio Abondio Italian These medal portrayals of the Holy Roman Emperor (1989.12.2) and his wife Maria are cast separate with plain reverse, but the couple can be found united on one medal as well. The separation of the images allowed to compare both captivating profiles as companion pieces side by side, but also enabled craftsmen to incorporate them in other Kunstkammer and presentation objects, such as ebony cabinets or boxes, silver drinking vessels, or precious jewelry mounts. Abondio entered the service of Emperor Maximillian II (r. 1564-76) in Vienna in 1566 and was kept on by his son Rudolf II (r. 1576-1612). The artist later moved with the imperial court from Vienna to Prague. His strength was in the imposing characterization of princely portraiture in which he never neglected his love for minute ornamental details.. Empress Maria. Inspired by Roman coins, with their portraits of rulers and allegorical representations on the reverse, the medals commemorated individuals or events and functioned as gifts and mementoes. Pisanellos medal of Don Inigo d'Avalos, grand chamberlain and military general to Alfonso V of Naples, depicts the sitter wearing a fur-trimmed robe and a hat composed of a rolled hood (cappuccio) and long draped portion. Ferdinand de Lesseps (French, Versailles 1805 - 1894 Guilly) 1884 Jean-Désiré Ringel d'Illzach The Alsatian artist Ringel was a prolific sculptor, glassmaker, wax modeler, ceramicist and medalist whose diverse artistic endeavors exemplified the outpouring of creative activity in France in the late nineteenth century. Nourished by German culture, immersed in music from a young age, and trained in sculpture in Dresden and Paris, Ringel brought a unique interdisciplinary approach to his creative practice, challenging artistic boundaries through innovative approaches to color, form, and symbolism. Ringels gifts as a medallion portraitist prompted the commission of a medallic portrait pantheon by the journal LArt beginning in 1882. Widely distributed, these medallions maintained the artists popularity with collectors, and provided him with a steady income that permitted his less commercial creative experimentations in wax and ceramics.
