Allegory of Autumn (Bacchus) ca. 1670s Filippo Parodi Filippo Parodi (1630-1702) was Genoas most important sculptor of the late Baroque period. Trained in that city in his familys workshop—his father Giovanni Battista was a woodcarver—Parodi also spent two periods of six years each working in Rome, where he absorbed Gianlorenzo Berninis approach to decorative ensemble. Parodis most prominent commissions include marble groups for churches and palaces in Genoa (for example, the St. John the Baptist for S. Maria Assunta di Carignano), Venice (the Tomb of Francesco Morosini, completed 1683, church of S. Nicolò dei Tolentini), and Padua (several important projects, most notably the decoration of the Cappella del Tesoro in the Santo). The first phase of Parodis career was dedicated to carving wood sculptures, of which this work is a prime example. Parodi oversaw a large workshop, designing and producing many elaborate objects in wood intended for the palaces of Genoa: sumptuous carved m

The Lost Pleiade c 1874-1875 United States. In creating this sculpture, Randolph Rogers was inspired by the Roman author Ovidís poem Fasti, which recounts the legend of the seven sister stars who lived among the constellations. Merope, the youngest sister, married Sisyphus and hid herself in shame because he was mortal. The sculpture depicts the outcast Merope as she seeks her celestial family. With its unclothed torso, The Lost Pleiade is the closest Rogers came to creating a complete nude. Although a conteporary viewers may not have understood the reference to Fasti, the title nonetheless reassured Victorian audiences that this partially nude woman had literary antecedents and was thus not intended as a sensual form.. Allegory of the Maréchal de Villarss Victory at Denain 1806, modified 1818 Model by Louis Simon Boizot French This composition, first cast with Napoleon's head, was originally designed to celebrate the French victory at Austerlitz. After the emperor's downfall and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy in 1814, the bronze sculptor Thomire reconfigured the group with the head of the maréchal de Villars in order to represent the great ancien régime strategist's victory over the Austrians at the 1712 battle of Denain (War of the Spanish Succession).. Satyr and Nymph, 17th century, Ferdinando Tacca, 1577-after 1641, 14 1/4 x 15in. (36.2 x 38.1cm), Bronze, Italy, 17th century, A mostly nude nymph slumbers against a rock, while a half-man, half-goat Satyr reaches toward her. What are his intentions, and what happens next' In Renaissance and Baroque symbolism, the female figure often stands for the human soul, whereas the maleespecially when characterized by a Satyr or other hybrid animalsymbolizes the bodily forces of hunger, thirst, and sexual lust. This sculpture presents a pivotal, open-ended moment, and the viewer is left to imagine what follows. In the 1600s, this kind of artwork was used as a conversation piece that prompted intellectuals to ponder the meaning and the conclusion of the scene.

. In the 18th century this small Venus was at the Museo Ridolfini-Corazzi in Cortona (Italy), a renowned collection of Etruscan and Roman art. It was then considered an ancient Roman statuette, but is now attributed to the Fleming Elias de Witte, who worked in Florence. By omittingthe arms and roughening the surface, he deliberately gave Venus the appearance of an excavated Roman bronze figurine.

Dancer with Tambourine modeled probably ca. 1885, cast 1920 Edgar Degas French Upon Degas's death in 1917, more than 150 figurative sculptures were found in his studio. Most were made of fragile wax, clay, and plastiline (a wax- and oil-based modeling material). Many had deteriorated. Only a few were preserved in copies that had been cast from them in plaster. Except for the wax Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (Washington: NGA) none of these sculptures had been publicly exhibited during the artists lifetime.Although Degas had not favored reproducing his sculptures in more permanent materials, his heirs authorized that copies be cast in bronze in order to preserve the compositions and to sell them as finished works. Paul-Albert Bartholomé, a sculptor and Degas's longtime friend, prepared 72 of the figures for casting, a process executed by the distinguished Paris foundry A.-A. Hébrard et Cie. The quality of the Degas bronzes was tightly controlled and their edition was limited. Only tw

Galloping Horse ca. 1630-40 Francesco Fanelli Italian If not terribly exacting technically, Fanelli bronzes such as this have dependably lively Baroque compositions.1 About 1736, George Vertue compiled a short list of “so many of this little Statues as I have seen at Ld Oxfords”; 2 the list includes several horse subjects, among them “a horse full gallop” that is very likely a bronze of this composition. Another of the type is in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Brunswick.James D. Draper, 1984Footnotes:1 See J.
