Wat Suthat Thepphawararam is a royal temple of the first grade, one of six such temples in Thailand. Construction was begun by King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke (Rama I) in 1807. Further construction and decorations were carried out by King Buddha Loetla Nabhalai (Rama II) who helped carve the wooden doors, but the temple was not completed until the reign of King Jessadabodindra (Rama III) in 1847. The temple is a fine example of the Rattanakosin architectural style. It also contains the Buddha image Phra Sri Sakyamuni or 'Sisakayamunee' which was moved from Sukhothai province.

Wat Mahathat was founded in the 13th century by King Intharathit (c. 1240-70) and rebuilt in the 14th century. It was the spiritual heart of the Sukhothai Kingdom. Sukhothai, which literally means 'Dawn of Happiness', was the capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom and was founded in 1238. It was the capital of the Thai Empire for approximately 140 years.

Wat Pong Sanuk Tai or 'The Monastery of the Southern Fun Marsh' was built in the late 18th century combining Burmese and Lanna styles of architecture. The temple's mondop is one of the finest examples of its type and is a marvelous blend of Lanna and Burmese workmanship. Lampang was originally founded during the 7th century Dvaravati period. Nothing remains from these early times, but the city is rich in temples, many of which have a distinctly Burmese flavour as Lampang had a substantial Burmese population in the 19th century, most of whom were involved in the logging industry.
