The saints gouged eyes, sunken cheeks, and tousled locks convey the spiritual ferocity with which he announces Christs coming. A painted plaster version of the bust (which Rodin derived from his over-life-size, full-length figure Saint John the Baptist Preaching of 1878) was first exhibited as an independent work in the Paris Salon of 1879. Each figure holds a weapon and a coat of arms on a strap. Some are dressed as knights with a breastplate and a helmet, others as princes or noblemen. They may represent the Counts of Holland. All the shields would have originally been painted.

Date: 1882; carved 1906-7.Here, Saint-Gaudens depicted his seventeen-month-old son, Homer Schiff Saint-Gaudens (1880-1958), seated in a child's chair, the folds of his garment escaping its confines and his pudgy left hand gripping its arm. As the inscription, rendered in the sculptor's characteristic lettering style, attests, the original portrait in bronze was presented to Dr. Henry Shiff, Saint-Gaudens's Paris confidant and Homer's namesake (with a slight variation in spelling). The sculptor kept another bronze on a wall of his Thirty-Sixth Street studio in New York City; it is visible in the background of Kenyon Cox's painting of Saint-Gaudens (08.130). Francis Davis Millet 1879 Augustus Saint-Gaudens American Saint-Gaudens and Francis Davis Millet (1846-1912) traveled in the same artistic circles, first meeting in Rome in 1873-74, and then painting murals for Henry Hobson Richardsons Trinity Church in Boston in 1876-77. Sculptor and painter/writer further solidified their bonds of friendship in Paris, and in March 1879 Saint-Gaudens, along with Samuel Clemens, stood in as witnesses at Millets wedding at Montmartre. This portrait of the groom, with a painters attributes of pallet and brushes, was likely a gift to the newlyweds. Here Saint-Gaudens delighted in rendering various textures, from the nubby coat to the wavy hair to the fine horizontal lines in the background. Millets daughter donated this cast to the Metropolitan in 1910; two years later, in April 1912, he died in the sinking of the Titanic.. Francis Davis Millet 12000
