Denis Diderot (1713-1784) 1773 Jean Antoine Houdon French A philosopher and man of letters, and one of the internationally famous exponents of the French Enlightenment, Denis Diderot is best known for the multivolume encyclopedia that he compiled and coedited with Jean Le Rond dAlembert (1717-1783) between 1751 and 1772. In the entry for painted portraits, Diderots Encyclopédie states that the principal merit of the genre is to render the sitter exactly, by capturing both his character and his physiognomy.[1 A portrait bust of Diderot, believed to be the terracotta bust now in the Musée du Louvre, which served as a model for the Museums marble version, was exhibited by the sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon at the Salon of 1771. The sitter approved of that work, describing it as très ressemblant ( having a very strong resemblance). This one represents the artists transition from more naturalistic portraits toward the abstracted mask that adorns the final study for the Monument to Balzac. Here, Balzacs agitated brow, pug nose, and deeply gouged eyes evoke the authors melancholic insights into the human psyche. Perhaps Rodin identified with Balzac. Robert Fulton (1765-1815) 1803-4 Jean Antoine Houdon French This bust depicts one of the last of many Americans to be sculpted by Houdon, the French master portraitist whose earlier images of Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin are embedded in our national consciousness. A painter first and an inventor second, Fulton sat for Houdon while visiting Paris in a fruitless attempt to enlist funding for his submarine invention several years before the ultimately successful Hudson River voyage of his steamship Clermont. The bust appears to have been commissioned by poet and diplomat Joel Barlow, a close friend of Houdon residing in Paris. In this apparently unique model, the handsome subject's air of vigor and informality is emphasized by the insouciance of his flaring overcoat lapels; later, buttoned-up versions of the bust echo the graver quality of Houdon's portrait of Barlow, with which the Fulton portrait originally was paired.A fitting coda to our already stellar collection of Houdon's p

Louise Adele Gould 1894, carved 1895 Augustus Saint-Gaudens American After Saint-Gaudens completed the high-relief portrait of Louise Gould (1856-1883) (15.105.1), her widower Charles Gould asked the sculptor to adapt the portrait to three dimensions. In this smooth bust-length rendering with a socle base, she is chastely dressed in a classicizing drape with knots at the shoulders. Gould expressed his pleasure at Saint-Gaudenss ability to capture his wifes "girlish simplicity and sweetness." This and the other two portraits of Louise Gould (15.105.1; 32.62.1) were translated to marble by the Piccirilli Brothers, the carvers of choice for such American leading sculptors as Saint-Gaudens, John Quincy Adams Ward, and Daniel Chester French.. The colossal sculpture represents Marianne, the female personification of the French republic, standing aloft a lavishly ornamented orb and chariot and surrounded by allegories of peace, liberty, labor, and justice. Disappointed by the pageantry of the 1889 unveiling of his Republic, which he felt undermined its purpose as a tribute to the French people, Dalou determined to create a monument solely dedicated to the laboring classes. Working without a commission to support the projects realization, Dalou privately developed his Monument to Working People over the next decade.
