Portrait of Antonio Canova (1757-1822). This frail old man is Antonio Canova, the most celebrated sculptor in Europe around 1800, and a model for many of Romes young artists. Despite its lifelike appearance, the sculpture was made after Canovas death, based on his death mask. Perhaps it was Adamo Tadolini who made the sculpture; he was one of Canovas last assistants and may have indented this as a tribute to his former master.

As early as 1852-53, he speculatively carved a marble relief of the emperor receiving Abd-al Kader at the Palais de Saint-Cloud and in 1853-55 began a plaster group on the theme of the empress protecting orphans and the arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Valenciennes).[1 Despite these initiatives to attract commissions from Napoléon　III and Empress Eugénie, it was not until he was asked to do a marble statue of their son, Prince Imperial Louis-Napoléon, and the dog Nero (1867, Musée d’Orsay, Paris) that he became a favorite at court. Date: 1879; cast 1906-7.While growing up in Concord, Massachusetts, French met the town's most celebrated resident, Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), a distinguished philosopher and writer and the leader of the Transcendentalist movement. Over a month of sittings, French captured the essential features of Emerson's physiognomy, notably his small, piercing eyes, distinctly curved nose, and characteristic sideways tilt of the head. John Barnard 1744 John Michael Rysbrack Flemish The Flemish-born Rysbrack was a dominant force in developing the psychologically penetrating portraiture of Augustan England. A log of his busts, begun by George Vertue in 1732 and continued until 1744, lists a bust of "Dr. Bernard, Bp Rapho," as well as a "Son of Mr. Bernard." The fate of the former bust is not known, but the Museum's bust is securely identifiable with the latter. William Barnard was consecrated bishop of Raphoe in Northern Ireland in 1744, succeeded to the bishopric of Derry in 1746-47, and died in 1768. The names of two sons, both clergymen, are recorded, but that of John Barnard is not. The boy is fashionably outfitted in Hussar costume, but there is a grave and wasted aspect to his intelligent features.
