Date: 1888, cast 1910.According to Saint-Gaudens, this bust of Civil War hero General William Tecumseh Sherman (1830-1891) was modeled during eighteen visits, each lasting about two hours. The sculptor depicted Sherman exactly as he appeared during the sittings--with his deeply creased brow, stubbly beard, and unbuttoned collar. The success of this portrait left Saint-Gaudens well poised to win a commission in 1892 for an equestrian monument honoring Sherman. Admiral David Glasgow Farragut 1879-80; cast 1910 Augustus Saint-Gaudens American This bust derives from a study Saint-Gaudens made for his first major commission, the Farragut Monument, unveiled in New York Citys Madison Square in 1881. The statue commemorated the Civil Wars most celebrated naval commander, Admiral David Glasgow Farragut (1801-1870), who earned glory for the 1862 capture of New Orleans and his victory at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864. During that battle, he issued his famous command, “Damn the torpedoes! Washington Allston. Artist: Edward Augustus Brackett (American, Vassalboro, Maine 1818-1908 Winchester, Massachusetts). Dimensions: 26 3/4 x 14 1/4 x 9 in. (67.9 x 36.2 x 22.9 cm). Date: 1843-44; carved 1843-44.Born in South Carolina, Washington Allston (1779-1843) spent his early career largely abroad and earned widespread admiration, in both America and Europe, for his ambitious history paintings and evocative landscapes. After settling in Boston in 1818, he mentored local artists, including Brackett, a self-taught portrait sculptor. When Allston died in July 1843, his family commissioned a likeness from Brackett. Although the sculptor took a death mask, he smoothed and softened the effects of age in the final portrait bust. Brackett went on to model portraits of such local luminaries as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Charles Sumner. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Thomas Cole by 1850 Henry Kirke Brown American Thomas Cole (1801-1848) enjoyed the patronage of influential New Yorkers, including the merchant Jonathan Sturges, who owned this bust by 1850. After the landscape painters untimely death, the citys cultural elite moved quickly to eulogize him, and this portrait was probably modeled as part of that effort—not during Coles lifetime. The work partakes of Browns customary blending of a highly realistic likeness with a conventional classicizing drape. The striking resemblance to a daguerreotype of Cole by Mathew B. Brady, then on view at the photographers Broadway gallery, may be more than a coincidence, for Brown would have looked to lifetime likenesses of Cole as an aid in modeling his own.. Date: 1765-75.The placement of busts of learned men in libraries is a tradition that dates from antiquity and proliferated in eighteenth-century Philadelphia. The likeness of the English philosopher John Locke (1632-1704) was a preferred subject that often ornamented the pediment tops of desks and bookcases. This example has a distinct naturalism in the sculpting of the philosopher's features that may have been inspired by well-known prints. Americans esteemed Locke for his philosophies that endorsed individual conscience, religious tolerance, and the defense of democracy. . Marble portraiture, usually reserved for rulers and the nobility, is here playfully employed for a base subject: a coarse old mans head with grotesque features. This kind of overturning of convention and mocking of artistic decorum was highly appreciated by art collectors.

Cosimo III de' Medici (1642-1723), Grand Duke of Tuscany ca. 1680-82 Giovanni Battista Foggini Italian These meltingly carved busts of father and son (see also 1993.332.2) are surely the finest examples of the portrait style of G. B. Foggini, the leading sculptor of the Florentine Baroque. While strong echoes of Bernini date the creation of the pair to shortly after the younger artist's return from Rome, they already exhibit Foggini's talent for the depiction of material opulence that earned him the post of Medici court sculptor. Dynamic contrasts abound: the fragile lace cravats and lavish mantles (emulating modes of the contemporary French court) set off the realistically depicted faces. They in turn provide their own study in contrasts: the commanding pose and classic Habsburg physiognomy of the balding father serve as counterpoint to the sweet, somewhat unformed face of the youth, overwhelmed by a delirious cascade of curls. Foggini's artistic genius inaugurated the final flourish

Abraham Lincoln 1860, cast ca. 1914 Leonard Wells Volk Volk met Lincoln in 1858 through his wife's cousin, Stephen A. Douglas. Lincoln, not yet President at the time, agreed to pose for the sculptor. Two years later, while Lincoln was in Chicago on legal business, he sat for Volk in his studio. In order to eliminate the need for several sittings, the artist made a life mask (Smithsonian Institution, Washington D. C.) that also became valuable to later artists who portrayed Lincoln. Volk's portrait bust depicts Lincoln deep in thought and finds its greatest strength in the simple naturalism representing a vigorous man. This example was cast in 1914 for the Metropolitan Museum by Theodore B. Starr, Inc. from a plaster copy of the 1860 bust.. Abraham Lincoln 13079

Queen Louise of Prussia Modeled 1799 Germany. Queen Luise enjoyed enormous popularity in Prussia as a symbol of resistance to Napoleon, becoming a cult figure after her death in 1810. The Berlin sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow created five different versions of his official portrait of Luise, both before and after her elevation to queen in 1797.
